Reading is Wild yearly to date total over 104,000 mark

The Moncton Wildcats, in partnership with RBC , the Times&Transcript and School District 2, have seen their community literacy project; Reading is Wild, pass the 104,000 mark for books read this year.

After four weeks, students as Hillsborough Elementary, Claude D. Taylor, Bessborough/Uplands and Magnetic Hill have more than doubled the projected goal of 47,000.

In week four, the total number of books read was 30,058. The previous three weeks total was 74,005 books. Week three numbers reached 30,674. The projected goal for the year was set at 47,000.

With a week remaining in the program, it's almost certain the numbers for the 11 years will surpass 475,000.

The breakdown for the individual schools showed Bessborough/Uplands leading the way with 9,798 books read. Reader of the Week honors went to Nate Unger, while winners of weekly Wildcats prizes were Isaac Cogswell, Gregory Leblanc, Madison Dayton and Samantha Gallant.

Magnetic Hill Elementary had the second highest number read in the past seven days at 9,436. Grade 5 student Annie Durant was selected as the week's top reader. Devin Rolfe, Kate Weldon, Josh Day and Ryan Fall were the weekly prize winners.

Riverview's Claude D Taylor School had a 7,157 total for the week. Fin Fogarty, who has read the most books in his class and is very enthusiastic about Reading is Wild took the Reader of the Week award. Making the weekly winnes list were Raven Nixon, Hunter Kirkpatrick, Laura Squires and Sophia Page.

Picked as Reader of the Week in Hillsborough was Grade two student, Quinn Reid, while Emma Holmden, Colten Steeves, Michaela Lutes and Ryan Tavender won weekly prizes. The Hillsborough weekly total was 3,667. The Hillsborough students have more than doubled their intended goal of 5,000 books.

Students taking part in the Reading is Wild program will be guests of the team on February 21st when they play the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles and on the 22nd when the Cats host the Shawinigan Cataractes.
