Re-Tooled Majors Get Past Brampton
January 6, 2012 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
The new look Mississauga St. Michael's Majors look pretty good so far.
In their first game since dealing veterans JP Anderson, Joseph Cramarossa and Derek Schoenmakers, the Majors turned in a spirited effort to edge the Brampton Battalion 3-2 in a shootout in Ontario Hockey League play Friday night at the Hershey Centre.
Newcomer Brandon Maxwell made 40 saves in regulation and another three in the shootout and Jordan Mayer scored the shootout winner to keep the Majors in eighth place in the Eastern Conference.
Sergey Kuptsov and Jamie Wise scored the goals in regulation for the Majors while Barclay Goodrow scored a pair of goals for the Battalion, who slipped a point behind Ottawa for the Eastern Conference lead despite picking up the single point.
Mississauga General Manager/Coach James Boyd was a busy man this week, picking up seven draft picks and forward Kristoff Kontos and Maxwell for the three veterans. He liked the way his team responded in the first game since the trades.
"We still feel we have a competitive team here and we showed it tonight," Boyd said. "I liked our speed tonight and I really like the way we moved the puck through the neutral zone, something we've struggled to do against this team this season.
"As the game went on we seemed to get a little more confident and it was great we were able to pick up the extra point."
Brampton out-shot Mississauga 42-38 in regulation but the Majors put two of their five shootout tries past Matej Machovsky while Maxwell stopped four of the five shots he faced in the shootout.
"I thought Maxwell was great," Boyd said. "He made some really good saves and showed his experience."
After a scoreless first period Goodrow opened the scoring on the power play at 14:03 of the second period with his 17th of the season. But Wise tied the game with his 14th of the season, also on a power play, at 18:52 to leave the teams tied 1-1 after 40 minutes.
Goodrow again restored the Battalion lead with his second of the game and 18th of the season at 5:14, but it took Kuptsov just 39 seconds to again tie the game when he scored his 10th of the year on a deflection.
The rest of the third period was scoreless, as was overtime, before Mayer and Brace scored in the shootout to offset Patrik Machac's goal for Brampton to give the Majors the extra point.
Mississauga went 1-for-6 on the power play while the Battalion scored once in their four extra man chances.
A busy weekend continues for the Majors when they travel to Peterborough to face the Petes on Saturday night. On Sunday Mississauga returns home to meet the Ottawa 67's at 2 p.m. at the Hershey Centre.
Tickets for all Majors games are available at www.ticketmaster.ca, or at the Hershey Centre box office during regular business hours. You can also call 905-502-7788 for more ticket information.
