February 23, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
In the final game of a rough three-game weekend, the Corpus Christi Rayz saw another close game go in the opposite direction. On Saturday Night from the Chaparral Ice Center in Austin, Texas, the Rayz fell to the Austin Ice Bats 3-1, losing their third straight. The loss dropped the Rayz record to 17-28-6, and left them five points back from the Ice Bats and three back from the Amarillo Gorillas for the final playoff spot in the Southern Conference. The Rayz and Bats are done for the weekend while the Gorillas will conclude their weekend at home against Youngstown on Sunday. The Rayz return to the American Bank Center next Friday Night to host the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees at 7:05pm. Tickets are on sale now. For more information, please call the Rayz at 361.814.PUCK. The Rayz and Bats opened the game with a scoreless frame, but there was no shortage of offensive action. The Ice Bats hit a post, and the Rayz had three point-blank chances to light the lamp, however Corpus Christi's Jason Tapp and Austin's Miguel Beaudry kept the goose eggs on the scoreboard after 20 minutes. The Bats outshot the Rayz 9-6 in the opening frame.
The second period featured more of the same from the first, however the Bats also received four middle frame power plays and capitalized with the only goal of the first two periods. At 3:08, Ted Vandemeer cut towards the Rayz net on a man advantage and slid the puck underneath Tapp to give the Bats a 1-0 lead. Austin outshot Corpus Christi 8-5 in the second period.
John Ronan made the score 2-0 at 10:16 of the second period with a backhand over the shoulder of Tapp. The Rayz pulled to within one on a Justin Quenneville rebound goal at 16:21, but got no further. Brendan Cook sealed the game for Austin with an empty net tally at 19:24.
Tapp made 22 saves on 24 shots and took the loss, dropping to 17-23-5. Beaudry got the win with 21 saves on 22 shots. His record jumped to 15-16. Corpus Christi went 0-3 on the power play and Austin was 1-6 on the man advantage. The Ice Bats outshot the Rayz 25-22.
