Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. â A four-run first inning was an insurmountable deficit for the Suns in a 5-2 loss to the Orlando Rays on Friday in front of 3,937 fans at Cracker Jack Stadium.
The Rays (24-29) scored four times off Suns starter Heath Totten, who gave up a leadoff triple to Amado German and run-scoring hits to Matt Diaz and Pete LaForest. The inning was capped by a two-run home run by Jonny Gomes. Gomes homered in his next at bat off Totten â a solo shot in the third â to score Orlando's fifth run. Gomes has hit four of his 10 home runs off Totten (3-5) who earned the loss.
The Suns (25-28) managed three hits, all off Rays starter Jim Magrane and none after the fourth inning. In the fourth, Jacksonville stranded the bases loaded with two outs and never mustered a rally the remainder of the game off Magrane (5-2) and two relievers. Evan Rust retired the side in order in the ninth to record his ninth save.
Tony Socarras' RBI double in the fourth and Reggie Abercrombie's run-scoring single in the second marked the scoring for Jacksonville, which lost three of four games to Orlando. Abercrombie's hit extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
Right-hander Edwin Jackson (2-2, 2.08 ERA) is scheduled to face Tennessee Smokies righty Nick Stocks (3-2, 4.61) at 7:05 p.m. Saturday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
