Ray Black Returns to Lunkers

Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers News Release

(Brainerd Lakes Area) - Ray Black, the sophomore out of the University of Pittsburgh, is back in the Lunkers uniform for the 2011 season and is now on the active roster.

Black, who was part of the Lunkers last season, was drafted in the 7th round by the San Francisco Giants in the 2011 MLB Draft. After playing the waiting game for a bit with the Giants, Black said their offer to him was not what he was hoping for.

"I waited and waited for an offer," said Black. "I got [the offer] pretty late and it wasn't everything I was hoping it would be."

Black talked with his coaches at Pittsburgh and they recommended him to play summer ball. Black had a temporary contract in the Cape Cod League, but it was too late to head up there after not signing with the Giants. So Black was looking for a full-time contract, and re-signing with the Lunkers made sense.

"I had a few returning teammates here in a Brainerd and a great host family, and I really enjoyed [being in Brainerd] last year," said Black.

Last summer with the Lunkers, Black pitched in 15 games and recorded eight saves, posting a 1.42 ERA. He says he is hoping to work on certain aspects of his game to improve his draft stock for next season.

"My consistency has to be a little bit better," said Black. I'm hoping to touch up on some mechanics, throw some strikes, and get a little more repetition."
