Visalia Rawhide News Release
VISALIA, CA - Courtesy of 16 hits, including four home runs, the San Jose Giants (27-16) forced a tie atop the California League's North Division with the Visalia Rawhide (28-17) after winning game one of the three-game series 12-2 on Tuesday night at Rawhide Ballpark.
RHP Brad Keller (3-3, 4.04), coming off his best outing of the year and winning three out of his last four starts, was tagged for seven hits, including three home runs, and five runs in five innings of work.
Two of the home runs allowed by Keller came in the first inning off back-to-back shots by RF Steven Duggar and SS C.J Hinojosa, who then homered again in the third inning. After back-to-back doubles following the home runs in the first, one by 1B Chris Shaw and one by 3B Jonah Arenado, the Giants were rolling with a 4-0 lead.
Keller settled in and despite the second Hinojosa home run, which pushed the lead to 5-0, and managed to get through five innings of work while striking out a season high seven hitters, including the side in his final frame.
RHP Sam Coonrod (4-1, 1.38) took the ball for San Jose and kept Visalia off balance all game. He relinquished just four hits and one run (earned), walking four and striking out two in the victory.
The Rawhide offense never got going, picking up two hits in the second and fifth innings against Coonrod but nothing else.
It wasn't until the bottom of the sixth when LHP Dustin Knight came in that the Rawhide finally got on the board. 2B Henry Castillo walked and stole second before LF Grant Heyman unloaded on a ball that cleared the Pasture in right field at Rawhide Ballpark to cut the lead to 5-2 San Jose.
Visalia never picked up another hit in the ballgame and after San Jose plated four more in seventh and three in the eighth against the Rawhide bullpen the final was 12-2.
CF Ronnie Jebavy hit a solo home run for the fourth and final round-tripper. The first seven members of the Giants batting order had at least one RBI and Duggar, Hinojosa, Arenado and 2B Brandon Bednar each had two apiece. 1B Chris Shaw along with Arenado paced the club with three hits apiece and the 16 hits picked up by San Jose ties a season-high for hits allowed in a game.
With the win, San Jose forces a tie atop the California League's North Division with two games remaining in this series but Visalia still holds a 5-2 record against San Jose this season.
RHP Ethan Elias (2-3, 5.83) will pitch for the Rawhide tomorrow night in game two against LHP D.J. Snelton (2-3, 4.08) for the Giants. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. for the 6:00 p.m. first pitch and it's a Win-Win Wednesday, as well as a Reading Day. Members of Tipper's Reading Club can bring in their completed bookmarks for a Family 4-Pack of tickets to the game presented by Educational Employees Credit Union (EECU).
