Storm Cool off Sixers with 5-1 Win

San Bernardino, CA - The Lake Elsinore Storm scored three runs in the and first were in control throughout a 5-1 win over Inland Empire at San Manuel Stadium on Tuesday. The Storm improved to 4-0 over the Sixers in 2016 after their 13-hit, six-double attack that snapped Inland Empire's win-streak at four games.

Jake Jewell (0-5) took the loss for Inland Empire after giving up the three runs in the first inning. He would allow one more run for a final line of four earned runs on ten hits in five innings with three K's and one walk. Zech Lemond (1-0) pitched well for the Storm (21-25) in his season-debut. The Rice University product allowed one unearned run in five innings on four hits, a walk and five Ks.

Josh VanMeter had three hits for the Storm while Luis Urias and Luis Tejada each chipped in a pair of singles. Urias also added his sixth stolen base of the year. Ryan Sebra had the lone multi-hit game for Inland Empire (15-31) while Hutton Moyer and Zach Houchins each had doubles for the Sixers. The 66ers were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

Notable in the game was the return of southpaw Matt Thornton. The former American League All-Star pitched a perfect inning of relief for the Storm on a MLB injury rehab for the Padres. Thornton was 14-7 for the then San Bernardino Stampede in 2001 with a 2.52 ERA and allowed 126 hits in 157.0 IP with 192 Ks. Also on Tuesday Cal Baptist alum and Corona, CA native Adam Hofacket made his Cal League debut for the Sixers allowing a run in one inning of work.

The series continues on Wednesday at 7:05 pm. Angel's southpaw CJ Wilson is slated to start the game on the mound for Inland Empire on an injury rehab outing.
