Bakersfield Blaze News Release
The Bakersfield Blaze came home hot off a 5-2 road trip, and while the team put 15 baserunners aboard, they stranded a dozen, and the visiting Rancho Cucamonga Quakes squeaked away with game one of the series, 4-2.
Musical chairs hit the starting rotation of the Blaze on Tuesday and it saw one of the Seattle Mariners most productive prospects move up a level.
Andrew Moore leads the Cal League in nearly every major statistical category and because of that, he has moved up to Jackson. With Moore gone, Lukas Schiraldi got the call up from Clinton and was immediately thrown into the fire.
Schiraldi squared off against the first place Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in Game 1 of a three-game set, but it was the road team that felt at home in this bout. The Quakes raced out to an early 1-0 lead in the first after Matt Beaty doubled to center field bringing home Kyle Garlick.
Bakersfield responded with a Daniel Torres RBI in the second to get the game tied at 1-1.
In the third inning, Rancho Cucamonga was able to pounce on Schiraldi again.
Joey Curletta connected on a based loaded triple to clear the bases and put the Quakes in front 4-1. The three-run cushion for Rancho Cucamonga was more than enough as they never looked back and eventually chased Schiraldi (L, 0-1).
The right-hander was a bit inconsistent as he struck out eight, but walked five in his Bakersfield debut.
Bakersfield clawed one run closer in the 5th when Drew Jackson's sacrifice fly brought home Joe DeCarlo, but the score would stick at 4-2 the rest of the way.
Not for lack of effort, though. Osmer Morales and Kyle Schepel combined to strike out seven Quakes over the final 4.0 innings, giving Blaze pitchers 15 whiffs on the night, and offensively, the Blaze loaded the bases in the 7th and 8th innings, but came up dry in each frame.
In all, the Blaze left 13 runners aboard, and despite numerous chances, the Quakes were able to escape with the win.
The series and homestand continue on our first ever Winning Wednesday (if the Blaze win, fans get a free ticket to the next Wednesday game!) in another 7:30pm start. Anthony Misiewicz takes the hill for the Blaze.
