Stockton Ports News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - Tuesday night provided a different venue, but the same result for the Stockton Ports. Embarking on a seven-game road trip following a 1-6 homestand, the Ports took an early lead but then committed three errors that led to six runs in the bottom of the first as the Lancaster JetHawks earned an 11-9 win in the opener of a three-game series at The Hangar.
Stockton's quick lead came courtesy of Jose Brizuela, who homered to right field to put the Ports up 1-0. Things turned sour quickly for Stockton in the bottom of the first. Ports starter Zack Erwin (1-5) issued a leadoff walk to Bobby Boyd and then Antonio Nunez reached on an error committed by Brizuela to put two aboard. After a double steal put runners at second and third. Ramon Laureano hit a ground ball to first on which Sandber Pimentel tried to throw home for a tag play which was late, allowing Laureano to reach with no out recorded and a run to score. Bryan Muniz followed with an RBI single and Jamie Richie then singled to left to put runners at first and second. Johnny Sewald came up and laid down a sacrifice bunt that Erwin fielded and threw to first with nobody covering the base, an error that allowed another run to score to make it 4-1. Kristian Trompiz came up next and reached on a fielding error committed by second baseman Joe Benny that allowed a fifth run to score. The JetHawks added a sixth run on an RBI groundout by Luis Reynoso to make it a 6-1 advantage.
Erwin gave up one more run in the seventh. After a pair of singles put runners at the corners with one out, Richie hit a sacrifice fly to right to make it a 7-1 contest. Erwin would suffer the loss, going two innings and allowing seven runs (three earned) on four hits.
The JetHawks scored again in the third on a solo homer by Jason Martin before the Ports plated three runs in the top of the fourth. With one on and one out, Argenis Raga reached on a fielding error committed by the shortstop Trompiz. After the second out was recorded, Melvin Mercedes hit an RBI single to right and Brizuela followed with a two-run double to center to make it an 8-4 contest.
The runs in the fourth were the last allowed by JetHawks starter Brock Dykxhoorn (4-1), who earned the win after going five innings and allowing four runs (one earned) on seven hits.
Ports reliever Victor Veliz, after allowing the homer in the third, gave up a run in the fourth on a wild pitch to make it a 9-4 game. It was the last run allowed by Veliz who went three innings and allowed two runs on three hits whiel striking out two.
Rob Huber entered the game in the sixth and, after retiring the first two batters, gave up a double to Laureano. Muniz followed and hit a pop-up to the right side of the infield that was dropped by Bennie, allowing Laureano to score and make it a 10-4 lead for Lancaster.
Stockton's biggest inning of the night came in the seventh. Facing JetHawks reliever Scott Weathersby, the Ports loaded the bases with one out on a walk and two singles. Pimentel came to the plate and hit a tapper to the right side of the infield that Weathersby fielded and threw to first, and the first baseman Muniz missed the bag with his foot, an error that allowed a run to score to make it 10-5. After the second out was recorded, Raga hit a two-run single to right and Iolana Akau hit a two-run double to right-center to bring the Ports to within a run at 10-9. With Akau representing the possible-tying run at second, Jacob Dorris (SV, 1) was summoned from the bullpen and struck out Mercedes to preserve the lead.
Lancaster got a run back in the bottom of the seventh. Huber issued a leadoff walk to Trompiz and then yielded an RBI double to Martin to run the JetHawks lead to 11-9. Huber was then lifted for Lou Trivino, who pitched the final two innings without allowing a run. Huber allowed two runs (one earned) in an inning-plus.
Dorris would go on to pitch the final two innings scoreless for the JetHawks, including striking out the side in the ninth inning to notch his first save of the season.
The Ports and JetHawks play the middle game of their three-game series on Wednesday at The hangar. Daniel Gossett (3-1, 3.18 ERA) makes the start for Stockton, opposed by Lancaster right-hander Elieser Hernandez (1-3, 7.18 ERA). First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. PDT.
