TUKWILA, WASH. - In a wild back-and-forth matchup in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 32, Seattle Sounders FC fought back from a two-goal deficit against the San Jose Earthquakes at Starfire Stadium, forcing extra time and an ensuing penalty shootout, with the Rave Green falling 10-9 on spot kicks. After conceding two goals on either side of halftime, the Rave Green rallied and leveled the game through second-half goals from Jimmy Medranda and Fredy Montero. After 30 minutes of extra time, the two teams battled deep into a lengthy penalty shootout, with Seattle coming up on spot kick short.

San Jose opened the scoring early, drawing a penalty on a foul by AB Cissoko inside the area. Jack Skahan slotted away the ensuing penalty to go up by a goal. Cade Cowell doubled the away side's lead in the 50th minute, beating Sounders FC goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland in a breakaway effort.

Jimmy Medranda pulled one back in stunning fashion for Seattle in the 54th minute, curling in a beautiful free kick from outside the area, past the outstretched hands of San Jose goalkeeper Matt Bersano and inside the near post. Fredy Montero, Seattle's leading goal-scorer across all competitions, leveled the match in the 77th minute, getting his head on the end of a Kelyn Rowe cross to finish the point-blank effort.

After 30 minutes of deadlocked extra time, San Jose won the ensuing shootout 10-9, with Léo Chú and Stefan Cleveland missing from the spot for Seattle.

Following tonight's match the Rave Green quickly return to MLS play with a home date against Minnesota United FC on Sunday, May 15 at Lumen Field (1:00 p.m. PT / ESPN, Sirius XM FC, 93.3 KJR FM, El Rey 1360 AM).

MATCH NOTES

Wednesday's match was Seattle's first contest in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup since 2019, with the last two editions of the national tournament being paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sounders FC is now 23-6-5 all-time in U.S. Open Cup play, including a 19-2-2 mark at home.

With his match-tying goal in the 77th minute, Fredy Montero took sole possession of Seattle's all-time scoring mark in Open Cup play (eight goals). Montero was previously tied with former Sounders FC forward Nate Jaqua for the lead.

Montero added to his all-time goal-scoring lead in Rave Green, with the veteran striker now owning 73 goals across all competitions in his two runs with the club (2009-2012, 2021-present).

With his free kick strike in the 54th minute, Jimmy Medranda scored his fifth goal for Sounders FC across all competitions. The Colombian wingback joined the Rave Green in a trade with Nashville in October of 2020.

Tonight's match marked the fourth all-time meeting between Seattle and San Jose in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, with Sounders FC holding a 1-1-2 record in those matchups. Prior to tonight, the two sides last met in the Open Cup in 2017, a 2-1 win for the Earthquakes.

Sounders FC has now dropped back-to-back matches against the Quakes this season, with Seattle losing in San Jose 4-3 on April 23 in MLS play.

A mainstay with Tacoma Defiance, rookie Dylan Teves made his Sounders FC debut this evening, entering the match in the 70th minute as a substitute for Ethan Dobbelaere.

Head Coach Brian Schmetzer deployed a 4-2-3-1 formation with two changes from Saturday's match at Dallas: Kelyn Rowe and Josh Atencio replacing Nouhou and Obed Vargas.
