Arizona Rattlers News Release
PHOENIX - The Arizona Rattlers have signed defensive specialist Erin Damond from their practice squad, head coach Gene Nudo announced today.
The move comes after the team was forced to put defensive specialist Wendell Davis on the injured reserve list a day before their game versus Orlando. Davis, who joins eight other Rattlers on the list, injured his right leg during last week's win over Nashville.
Damond (6-0, 190 pounds) is in his second AFL season after a brief stint with the Utah Blaze where he recorded five tackles in two games. Utah selected Damond in the sixth round of the expansion draft, but released him in Week 3. Prior to joining the Blaze, he spent last season as a defensive specialist with the San Jose SaberCats where he saw action in five games, posting 23 and a half tackles and two pass breakups. In 2004, he played five games with the af2's Tennessee Valley Vipers and also spent time on the Philadelphia Soul's practice roster.
A starting defensive back at Southern University, Damond recorded 45 tackles and four interceptions his senior season. Prior to transferring to Southern, he played two seasons at Louisiana State University where he tallied 33 tackles and four interceptions.
Born in New Orleans, La., Damond was a three-sport letterman at Bogalusa (La.) High School where he played running back and defensive back. He was selected first team All-District all four years while earning second team All-State honors as a senior.
"He's an experienced guy that worked with our defensive coordinator (Mike Church) last season," said Nudo. "We are confident he can jump in and get the job done."
The Rattlers also signed offensive/defensive lineman Tim Croff and wide receiver/defensive back Arthur Smith to their practice squad.
Arizona will aim for their third-straight home victory when they take on the Orlando Predators at US Airways Center on Friday, March 10. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. MST and tickets can be purchased by calling 602-514-TDTD.
