IMPROVEMENT: A number of offseason rule changes designed to decrease the number of penalties and the length of games are working. The average time for an AFL game is down by nearly 10 minutes from last year, improving from 2:45 to 2:35. The number of penalties has dropped as well, decreasing from an average of 24 per game in 2005 to 17 per game this year.

700 CLUB: Dallas Desperados' QB CLINT DOLEZEL (697) needs three touchdowns to become the third player in AFL history to throw for 700. Only QB AARON GARCIA of the New York Dragons (757) and QB ANDY KELLY of the Kansas City Brigade (739) have thrown more. If Dolezel tops the 700 career touchdown mark this week he will have accomplished this feat in 125 games, the quickest of any player in AFL history. Garcia reached 700 in 130 games and Kelly did it in 150.

HEATED RACE: Tampa Bay Storm QB SHANE STAFFORD and Utah Blaze QB JOE GERMAINE currently lead the AFL in passing yards with 2,022 and 2,020, respectively. Both are on pace to break the all-time single-season record set in 2005 by San Jose SaberCats QB MARK GRIEB (4,796). Stafford is on pace for 5,392 yards, while Germaine is on pace for 5,387 yards.

RECORD PACE: Utah Blaze OS SIAHA BURLEY is currently on pace to set single-season records with 163 receptions, 2,272 receiving yards, and 56 touchdowns. OS MARCUS NASH of the Las Vegas Gladiators set the reception record in 2004 with 154 catches. The receiving yardage mark was set by WR/DB CALVIN SCHEXNAYDER of the San Jose SaberCats in 1998 while playing for the Arizona Rattlers with 1,982 yards. The touchdown mark stands at 46 and is shared by five different players.

RUSHING THE RECORD BOOK: OL/DL JAMES BARON of the Nashville Kats and OL/DL TOM BRIGGS of the Austin Wranglers could move past SYLVESTER BEMBERY on the all-time sacks list this week. Baron needs 2.0 sacks to pass Bembery, while Briggs needs 2.5. OL/DL JOE JACOBS of the San Jose SaberCats needs 1.5 sacks to become the fifth player in AFL history to record 40.0 career sacks.

MONUMENTOUS FEAT: FB/LB BOB MCMILLEN, who is in his 12th AFL season and fourth with Chicago, needs seven rushing yards this week to pass FB/LB LES BARLEY, who retired in 2001 with 1,382 career rushing yards to become the AFL's all-time leading rusher.
