Albany River Rats News Release

ALBANY, NY - River Rats leading scorer Jerome Samson assisted on Albany's first tally of the night and scored the game-winner midway through the second period as the Albany River Rats defeated the Adirondack Phantoms 2-1 Saturday night at the Times Union Center. Albany clinched the Time Warner Cable Cup series with the victory, improving to 7-1-1-0 against the Phantoms this season, with three games still remaining between the clubs.

The River Rats led 1-0 after the first period and 2-1 after the second on goals from Zach Boychuk and Samson, respectively. Albany was out-shot 10-3 in the final frame, but goaltender Justin Peters kept everything in front of him in to hold on for the win.

Boychuk scored the game's first goal at 10:19 of the opening period, beating Adirondack goalie John Graham off of a 2-on-1 feed from Samson. Albany carried its slim lead into the first intermission, but Patrick Maroon put the Phantoms on the board at 2:39 of the second period on a short-side stuff-in. Samson answered exactly two minutes later with his team-leading 24th goal of the season, a wrap-around tally that gave Albany a 2-1 lead which it would not relinquish.

Peters stopped 29-of-30 shots faced in the game to earn the win, as Albany improved to 30-22-3-3 this season. Graham allowed two goals on 23 shots and took the loss, as Adirondack fell to 26-26-2-2 this year. The Phantoms out-shot the River Rats 30-23 in the game and went 0-for-5 on the power play, while Albany was 0-for-4 on the man-advantage.

The River Rats travel to Hershey, PA, on Sunday for a 5:00 p.m. faceoff against the AHL-leading Bears. River Rats 2009-10 pro-rated season and flexible ticket packages are now on sale at the River Rats executive offices at the Times Union Center, by calling (518) 487-2244 or by logging onto www.albanyriverrats.com.
