Moose Blanked By Marlies, 2-0
February 20, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release
The Manitoba Moose suffered a 2-0 loss to the Toronto Marlies in a matinee performance on Saturday in front of 6,435 spectators at the Ricoh Coliseum. This is the third time the Moose have been shut out by an opponent this season. Goaltender Daren Machesney stopped 30 of 32 shots in his 17th appearance this campaign while Winnipeg native James Reimer stopped all 31 shots for his first AHL shutout.
Even though the Moose were outshooting the Marlies 4-2, the home club from Toronto was the first to get on the board. Daren Machesney stopped the initial attempt but Viktor Stalberg pounced on the loose rebound and tucked it behind the 23 year-old netminder to open the scoring at 4:50.
Toronto embarked on the first powerplay of the game when Marco Rosa was called-out for slashing at 6:52. Despite bringing their shot count to 10 on the man-advantage, the visitors couldn't extend their lead any further.
At 16:01 Manitoba was handed their second penalty of the game when Pierre-Cedric Labrie was called-out for roughing. With a crowd of players in front of Machesney's crease, the goaltender was making save after save to keep the puck out of the net. On their 17th shot of the match the Marlies connected when Kyle Calder poked the puck over the goal-line for a 2-0 tally.
Manitoba's powerplay unit made their debut at 6:57 of the second period when Brendan Mikkelson was sent to the sin bin for interference. The Moose fired three shots on James Reimer during the two-minute advantage, but couldn't beat the Winnipeg-born back-stopper.
Templers flared late in the second period when Tommy Maxwell and Brendan Evans got tangled up in front of the visitor's bench. After both attackers were separated by the linesmen, they headed to their respective penalty boxes to serve their five-minute fighting majors - with an additional instigating minor and misconduct for Maxwell.
Manitoba received back-to-back powerplay opportunities in the third period, but Reimer made several acrobatic saves to keep the Moose scoreless. By the final minutes of the game, the Moose matched the Marlies in shots but still couldn't connect. The Moose suffered their third shutout of the season in a 2-0 loss to the Toronto Marlies.
LOOKING AHEAD The Moose head to Houston next Thursday to take on the Aeros.
