Rats lose 2-1 in shootout

GLENS FALLS, NY- Adirondack forward Jared Ross scored the game winner in the second round of a shootout as the Phantoms defeated the Albany River Rats 2-1 Friday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center. The River Rats return to Albany tomorrow for a 5:00 p.m. rematch with Adirondack; admission to tomorrow's game and to Albany's 2:00 p.m. "Rats Fest" is free to the general public.

After exchanging 1-0 periods through two frames, the new rivals drew even in a scoreless third period and the scoring draught continued through a wide open four-on-four overtime session. AHL All-Star Jared Ross beat Albany's Mike Morrison in the second round of the ensuing shootout and Krys Kolanos sealed the game with the shootout's second goal in the fifth round.

River Rats forward Jerome Samson netted the only goal of the middle frame, driving hard to the net before flipping the puck behind Phantoms goalie Johan Backlund to knot the game at 1-1. Rookie Drayson Bowman and defenseman Elgin Reid assisted on the tally. Ross gave Adirondack an early 1-0 lead with a power play goal just three minutes into the game.

Special teams registered a lot of time in the exhibition match, as the two sides combined for fifty penalty minutes.

River Rats goaltender Mike Murphy stopped 7-of-8 shots faced in 30:45 of action. His replacement, Mike Morrison, stopped all eleven shots that he saw. Philadelphia goalie Johan Backlund allowed one goal on 27 shots. Albany out-shot Adirondack 27-19 and went 0-for-7 on the power play; the Phantoms were 1-for-6 with the man advantage.
