GLENS FALLS, NY - Adirondack Phantoms center Jared Ross scored a power play goal and then added the shootout winning tally in a 2-1 win over the Albany River Rats Friday night in pre-season action at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

The Phantoms wasted little time getting on the scoreboard in their first-ever AHL action as the home team at the Glens Falls Civic Center. With 11 seconds remaining on a Jerome Samson hooking minor Jared Ross finished off a beautiful three-pass sequence from Andreas Nodl and Marc-Andre Bourdon for a power play goal at 2:50 of the first period. In spite of taking the early 1-0 lead, Adirondack had penalty trouble and spent a good portion of in the opening frame on the penalty kill.

Samson would make amends for his first period penalty by tying the game midway through the second frame. The Albany right wing took a pass from Drayson Bowman and beat goaltender Johan Backlund to the near post at 8:44. Albany out-shot Adirondack 9-4 in the period, but saw the score remain at 1-1 after forty minutes.

Neither team could find the game-winner in the third period, thanks in large part to Backlund who made several sensational saves to force overtime. The five minute overtime session elapsed without a goal and sent the Phantoms into their second straight pre-season shootout.

Ross opened the scoring in the second round as he fired the puck past River Rats goaltender Mike Morrison. Backlund stopped all four shooters that he faced and Krys Kolanos finished Albany off with a goal in round four to give the Phantoms their first win of the exhibition schedule.

Phantoms starter Johan Backlund earned the win by stopping 26-of-27 shots in regulation and overtime and then went 4-for-4 in the shootout as Adirondack improved to 1-1 in pre-season action. Albany starting goaltender Mike Murphy played the first 30:45 of the game and made seven saves on eight shots in a no decision. Backup goalie Mike Morrison played the final 34:15, blocking all 11 shots he faced, but was 3-for-5 in the shootout as the River Rats dropped their pre-season opener.

The Phantoms will complete their pre-season schedule on Saturday, September 26th at 5:00 pm as they travel to Albany face the River Rats in the second half off their home-and-home exhibition series at the Times Union Center. The Phantoms 2009-10 Home Opener is slated for Saturday, October 3rd at 7:00 pm at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
