Rasmus Rallies Cards for 12-10 Win
May 29, 2007 - Texas League (TL1)
Springfield Cardinals News Release
Colby Rasmus tied a Springfield franchise record with seven RBIs, as the Springfield Cardinals came from behind for a second straight night, holding on to defeat the San Antonio Missions by a score of 12-10 on Tuesday night at Hammons Field.
Hammons Field was definitely a hitter's park on Tuesday night, as the two clubs combined for 22 runs and 29 hits.
Trailing 8-3 in the bottom of the fourth, the Cards scored five times to even the game at 8-8. Colby Rasmus highlighted the inning with his second of three hits, a bases-loaded double to drive home three runs and make it 8-6. Rasmus scored two batters later, as Juan Richardson's second of three hits, an RBI single, made it 8-7. Bryan Anderson's second hit of the inning capped the frame, as Joe Mather scored to tie the game at 8-8.
Springfield took the lead for good in the fifth, as Rasmus unloaded his third homer in two games, a three-run blast to right field to put the Cards up 11-8 against San Antonio reliever Jon Searles (1-3). His tenth homer of the year now ties him for second in the Texas League, behind only teammate Joe Mather.
San Antonio got two runs in the seventh off of Cards' reliever and eventual winner Michael Cooper (1-1). But that's as close as they'd get, as Joe Mather gave the Cards a big insurance run with a mammoth shot to left field in the eighth, giving Springfield a 12-10 lead. For Mather, the home run is his league-leading 13th of the year.
That would be enough for Cards' closer Chris Perez, who struck out the side in the ninth inning for his 12th save of the year.
With his seven-RBI night, Rasmus now leads the league with 35 and also ties a franchise record held by Rico Washington and Terry Evans.
Cards' starter Mitchell Boggs had a rough outing, allowing eight runs on 11 hits in four innings. Missions' starter Sean Thompson also struggled in a no-decision, allowing seven runs on eight hits over 3 2/3 innings.
San Antonio's Nick Hundley had a huge game offensively, picking up a three-run homer, his fifth and a three-run double, giving him six RBIs in the loss.
Springfield now stands just two games behind Tulsa in the North, moving their record to 23-25 with the win. The Cards will send Cory Rauschenberger (4-2) to the mound on Wednesday night, as they look for the three-game sweep over the Missions. The Missouri Lottery will be giving away 1,000 Scratchers to fans 18 years and over on Wednesday night. Gates open at 6:10pm and game time is 7:10pm.
