Springfield Cardinals News Release
The Springfield Cardinals split a double-header on Thursday, taking game one against Wichita by a score of 7-5, while the Wranglers took game two by a score of 6-5 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita.
Game one saw the Cards take an early lead, then rally to get Cory Rauschenberger's first win at the Double-A level. Juan Richardson had an RBI double in the first, as Springfield took a 1-0 lead. Tyler Greene and Jon Jay had RBI hits to put the Cards up 3-0 in the second.
Rauschenberger struggled in the second inning, giving up four runs, as Wichita took a 4-3 lead.
The Cards grabbed the lead back in the third though, scoring twice to take the lead for good at 5-4. Colby Rasmus homered to right field to tie the game at 4-4, leading off the third. Richardson reached on an infield single and later scored on a Jarrett Hoffpauir RBI single, giving the Cards the advantage at 5-4.
Springfield got a big insurance run in the sixth, as Tyler Greene singled and scored on an RBI triple by Jon Jay, making it 6-4 against Wichita starter and 2006 first overall pick Luke Hochevar (2-3).
Rauschenberger (1-2) settled into a nice groove, retiring the last ten men he faced, going five innings for his first win of the year.
New Cardinals' reliever Ryan Meaux allowed a run in the sixth, but Chris Perez came into the game and recorded the final out, preserving the 6-5 lead.
After the Cards got a run in the seventh on Joe Mather's league-leading 11th long ball of the year, Perez struck out the side in the bottom of the inning to record his fifth save of the season.
In game two, the Cards rallied from an early 4-0 deficit, eventually tying the game at 5-5.
Colby Rasmus put the Cards on the board with his second homer of the double-header, his fourth of the year, making it 4-1 in the fourth against Wichita starter Mike Connolly.
Trailing 5-1 in the fifth, Springfield got a two-run triple from Jon Jay, making it 5-3. On the play, Jay appeared to jam his right wrist while sliding into third. He was removed from the game for precautionary reasons. Pinch runner Tyler Greene the scored on a sac fly from Mike McCoy, making it 5-4. With two outs, Rasmus then hit a ball to the warning track in right field that was dropped by right fielder Geraldo Valentin. Rasmus ended up at third on the three-base error and moments later scored on a wild pitch from Wichita reliever Jarod Plummer, tying the game at 5-5.
The Wranglers got the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh against Cards' reliever Matt Scherer (1-2). Craig Brazell singled with one out and was replaced with pinch runner Adam Greenberg. After Greenberg stole second, Jorge Padilla was issued an intentional walk. Wichita third baseman Ed Lucas saw just one Scherer pitch, lining the game-winning hit into right-center field, scoring Greenberg to give Wichita a split in the double-header.
Wranglers' reliever Juan Cedeno (2-0) earned the win by retiring Juan Richardson for the final out in the top of the seventh inning with two men on base.
The split gives Springfield a 10-13 record, 1 ½ games behind Tulsa in the North Division. The Cards and Wranglers finish their four-game set on Friday night, as Jaime Garcia (1-1) goes for Springfield, while Wichita will send Dusty Hughes (0-2) to the hill.
