Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

It looked like the clouds were going to part in Corpus Christi's series at Midland. After loosing the first three games, the Hooks carried a four-run lead into the eighth only to have things turn around in a hurry.

The RockHounds erupted for six runs in their final two frames, capped by a three-run, walk-off homer off the bat of Vasili Spanos to push Midland past Corpus Christi 8-6 Friday night at Citibank Ballpark.

The RockHounds (17-8) have now claimed seven of the eight games played between both clubs this season, dropping Corpus Christi to 8-20 in the first half.

Back-to-back doubles by Spanos and Brant Colamarino ignited Midland's rally in the eighth. Hooks reliever Evan Englebrook, who started the frame, yielded a single by Landon Powell to score Spanos. A walk to Myron Leslie loaded the bases and forced Englebrook's exit. Ryan Thompson (1-2), the Hooks' fourth pitcher of the night, gave up a Brian Snyder sacrifice fly and a line-single to left by Gregorio Petit to pull the RockHounds within one.

With Thompson on the hill and Midland trailing 6-5 in the ninth, Richie Robnett doubled to right and Jeff Baisley walked, setting the stage for Spanos' blast onto the berm in left field.

The Hooks, who hadn't scored first in eight-straight games, posted a 2-0 lead in the fourth. With two away and runners at first and second, Ray Sadler chopped a ball deep into the hole at shortstop, leaving no play for Petit and scoring Drew Sutton from third base. Beau Torbert then laced a single up the middle to plate Todd Self.

Corpus Christi added on in the sixth. Neil Sellers led off the frame with a line-single to left. Self, the next batter, blasted an opposite-field home run that landed just inside the left-field foul pole, staking the Hooks to a 4-0 advantage.

Felipe Paulino, making his first start of the season after joining Corpus Christi last week, worked on a restricted pitch count through three innings. The righty pitched a perfect first and third, escaping a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the second to keep the ‘Hounds off the scoreboard. He allowed two hits and struck out two.

Josh Muecke held things together momentarily in relief, surrendering two runs and five hits over four innings. In the sixth, the southpaw worked his way into another one-out, bases loaded situation for Midland. This time, the RockHounds capitalized with an RBI-fielder's choice off the bat of Colamarino to cut the Hooks' lead to three.

Corpus Chritsti responded with two more tallies in the seventh. Edwin Maysonet lined a two-out single past the pitcher and into center field. After a stolen base and a throwing error by the catcher Powell, Maysonet crossed the pay station when Sutton served a single to center. Sellers doubled Sutton home in the next at-bat to put the Hooks up 6-1.

Moments before the first pitch, Corpus Christi made a roster move. Catcher Jeff Mackor, who has been with the club since spring training, was activated. RHP Chance Douglass has been placed on the inactive list.

The Hooks return to Whataburger Field tomorrow at 7:05 in the first of a four-game set against San Antonio. Josh Miller (0-2, 3.37) is slated to start for Corpus Christi, while the Missions counter with Cesar Ramos (2-2, 5.20).
