Rapidz win 18-9

(WORCESTER, MA) The Worcester Tornadoes allowed 11 walks and made five defensive errors, opening the door for the Ottawa Rapidz to win the second game of the series, 18 - 9 on Saturday night. The 18 runs scored set a new Rapidz franchise record for most runs scored in a single game.

The Rapidz set the tone from the beginning of the game, scoring three runs in the first inning. Catcher Kyle Geiger continued his great season hitting a one-run single. Felix Escalona followed with a two-run double into left field. The visitors added to their lead in the third with four more runs. Pete Pirman produced three of those runs with his first homerun of the season. The Rapidz then added seven runs in the fourth against a struggling Alex Beras. The Rapidz brought 12 batters to the plate in the fourth which was the most productive inning in the Rapidz young history.

The Tornadoes came back from behind scoring six times in the bottom of the fourth. Chuck Jeroloman produced the first run with a walk while the bases were loaded. Brett Thaler then added a one-run single, followed by consecutive two-run doubles by Mike MacMillan and B.J. Weed. Weed added a three-run homerun in the sixth, his first of the season, to make it 14-9 Rapidz.

The Rapidz increased their lead in the seventh, adding two runs on Felix Escalona's first homerun of the season. The visiting team completed the score adding two more runs in the top of the ninth, with Jared Lemieux and Jose de los Santos walking with the bases loaded.

Jason Pilkington (1-0) continued his good work, collecting his first win of the season. Ryan Mitchell (1-1) had a tough night, taking the loss after allowing seven runs, six of them being earned, seven hits including a homerun, and one walk in three innings of work. He also hit two batters, and struck out two.

The Rapidz and the Tornadoes complete their series on Sunday, June 15 at 1:05pm. Adam Hawes (1-2, 4.35 ERA) will be on the mound for the Rapidz. His opponent will be Shaun McNamara (0-2, 5.09 ERA) for the Tornadoes. The Rapidz will host their Canadian rivals, the Quebec City Capitales, for a three-game series, starting on Monday, June 16 at 7:05pm.
