Rapidz fall to Tornadoes

(OTTAWA, ON) Friday, August 29, 2008 - The Worcester Tornadoes were in town on Friday night to face off against the Ottawa Rapidz, with the visitors taking an 8-5 win to open the series.

Three consecutive singles followed by a grounder to second base put the Tornadoes ahead 2-0 in the top of the first inning. They added a third run in the top of the third inning with B.J. Weed and Francisco Caraballo doubling to manufacture the run.

The Rapidz had their big inning in the bottom of the third scoring five unearned runs to take a 5-3 lead. Jared Lemieux singled, Jose de los Santos reached safely on an error and Jabe Bergeron singled to load the bases. Kyle Geiger then reached first on an error scoring Lemieux, before Jereme Milons came up to bat and cleared the bases with a grand slam.

The Tornadoes scored once in the top of the fifth inning and took the lead in the top of the seventh scoring twice on a single by Alez Trezza's. Caraballo added a two-run shot in the top of the ninth to complete the scoring for a final score of 8-5.

Adam Hawes (4-13) suffered the loss for the Rapidz. In 6.2 innings he allowed 10 hits, six runs (all earned), two walks and four strikeouts. The win goes to Shaun McNamara (3-10) who allowed five runs (all unearned) on seven hits, three walks and three strikeouts in seven innings of work. Eddie Pena picked up his ninth save of the season for Worcester in the win.

The Rapidz announced before the game the release of Patrick Donovan. Brought in last week as a preventive measure the right-handed pitcher appeared in one game with the Rapidz, allowing one hit in 1.1 innings.

The series continue on Saturday, August 30 at 1:05pm. Noel Baca III (2-10, 4.04 ERA) for the Rapidz will square off against the Tornadoes' Kyle Jackson (0-0).
