Colorado Rapids News Release
INDUCTING THE GREAT ONE: The Colorado Rapids and the National Soccer Hall of Fame will be holding a press conference today, Tuesday April 19th, at 2:00 p.m. (MT) at ESPN Zone in Downtown Denver (16th Street and Lawrence) to announce the 2005 National Soccer Hall of Fame Inductees. The press conference will open with a 30 minute live coverage segment from ESPN News out of three locations nationwide (Denver, DC and New York).
HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER SATURDAY AT INVESCO FIELD AT MILE HIGH: Arguably the biggest rivalry in Littleton's Girls Varsity soccer will come to INVESCO Field at Mile High this Saturday, April 23rd at 3:45 p.m. (MT) when Heritage High School takes on Arapahoe High School prior to the Rapids' home game against the Columbus Crew. The two sides, who have participated in some of the great chapters of girls HS soccer in the state, will this time square off on the turf of the mighty mile high pitch.
INAUGURAL GAME OF THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN CUP: The Rocky Mountain Cup kicked off last weekend with the first ever official Rapids vs. Real game in which the Salt Lake expansion franchise took the three points, winning the match 1-0. The Rapids will have three more opportunities to claim victories and take home the inaugural Rocky Mountain Cup, including the final game of the season on October 13th at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Real Salt Lake will climb from 4,800 feet to 5,280 feet for the first time on August 26th at 7:30 p.m. when they come visit the Rapids at INVESCO Field at Mile High.
THE RAPIDS' ELEVEN HOME GAME UNDEFEATED STREAK: With their 0-0 draw against FC Dallas on last Saturday's 2005 Home Opener at INVESCO Field, the Rapids have extended the team's undefeated streak at the Mile High pitch to 11 games. The Black and Blue have established a 5-0-6 record in the streak, outscoring their opponents 12-5. The Rapids' last loss at INVESCO Field took place more then 300 days ago, with a 1-0 loss against the Kansas City Wizards on Wednesday, June 9, 2004. (The streak stands at 12 games if one counts all competitions; the Rapids defeated the LA Galaxy last October in Playoff Game 1 at INVESCO Field).
"COOKIE" IS BACK: English midfielder Terry Cooke, who signed a multiyear deal with the team on March 25, 2005 and had to travel back home to get his work visa stamped at the US Embassy in England, returned to the United States on time to see action in the Rapids' 1-0 loss to Real Salt Lake at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Cookie played 29 minutes for the Black and Blue in his MLS debut.
RAPIDS RESERVE TEAM KICKS OFF '05 WITH 2-2 TIE: The Rapids Reserve team opened the 2005 MLS Reserve League tournament with an exciting 2-2- tie against Real Salt Lake. Two goals from forward Sasha Gotsmanov, the Belarus native and 2005 MLS Supplemental draftee, were enough to get the Black and Blue Reserves their first point in team history. The Rapids Reserve team will take on the Columbus Crew Reserves this weekend in Colorado, as they too look for their first victory of the year.
