Colorado Rapids News Release

Shortly after earning their second consecutive road win of the season, the Colorado Rapids learned their opponent in the Fourth Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Dallas Burn defeated the A-League's Virginia Beach Mariners 2-0 at Old Panther Stadium in Duncansville, Texas behind first half goals from Toni Nhleko and Ronnie O'Brien. Nhleko put the Burn on the board in the 20th minute before O'Brien doubled the lead just three minutes later. Goalkeeper Jeff Cassar and the rest of the Burn defense made the lead stand up for the final 67 minutes despite losing Milton Reyes to a red card in the 74th minute. As a result of the red card, Reyes will now be unavailable for Dallas' next Open Cup match against the Rapids on July 20.

The Colorado Rapids enter the competition in the Fourth Round on Tuesday, July 20 when they take on the Burn at The Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas at 6:30 p.m. (MT). They will be looking to replicate their Open Cup form of the 1999 season when they defeated the Seattle Sounders, Tampa Bay Mutiny and Charleston Battery to reach the Cup Final, only to fall 2-0 to the upstart Rochester Raging Rhinos.

Last year the Rapids defeated the Kansas City Wizards 3-2 in the Fourth Round before falling to the Chicago Fire 3-2 in the Quarterfinals.

In other U.S Open Cup news, the Boulder Rapids Reserve saw their Cinderella Cup run come to a dramatic end as they fell 2-1 to the Minnesota Thunder in double overtime.

Former Rapids forward David Castellanos opened the scoring for the Thunder in the 19th minute. But Boulder would equalize just before halftime when John Pulido, a sixth round draft pick of Colorado, converted off a feed from Lance Snodgrass.

At the end of 90 minutes, the game was still tied 1-1, sending the match to overtime. After the first 15 minutes of overtime was completed without a goal, the match seemed destined for penalties before Freddy Suarez scored four minutes form the end to send the Thunder through to the next round and eliminate Boulder.
