Columbus Crew SC News Release

Columbus, OH- The Columbus Crew dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to the Chicago Fire in the U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 tonight at Crew Stadium.

Chicago forward Damani Ralph scored in stoppage time of the first overtime (106th minute) to give the Fire the victory that puts them in the final eight of the Open Cup. Stoppage time was apparently added to the first overtime after Edson Buddle was given a questionable red card in the 97th minute on a tackle on Logan Pause.

Crew midfielder Frankie Hejduk put Columbus on top 1-0 in the 27th minute when he leapt over Fire defender C.J. Brown to head home a Chris Wingert cross.

The Fire tied the game at 1-1 with a penalty kick in the 66th minute after Duncan Oughton was called for a foul on Andy Williams in the box. Ralph converted the PK to the right of Crew goalkeeper Jon Busch who just barely missed saving the shot with his right hand. Busch was magnificent all night, registering 13 saves.

Columbus now travels to Denver to face the Colorado Rapids on Saturday, July 24, at 5 p.m. (ET) at INVESCO Field at Mile High in a game that is televised on ESPN2.
