Colorado Rapids News Release

DENVER (Friday, October 13, 2006) - For two straight weeks, beginning this coming Monday, October 16, the Colorado Rapids and the Colorado Army National Guard will again partner to arrange a series of visits to elementary, middle and high schools via military helicopter (landing in school yards all across Colorado's Front Range) to promote the Red Ribbon Anti-Drug program among students.

The Red Ribbon campaign, a program of the Colorado National Guard Drug Demand Reduction Office, is designed not only to raise awareness about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, but to educate Colorado's children on how to avoid substance abuse as well.

Over the past several years, the Colorado Rapids have forged a strong partnership with the men and women of the Colorado Army National Guard. Given the National Guard's historical role and intensified efforts in serving and protecting our American communities following Sept. 11, 2001, the Rapids have been proud to do their part by supporting the Colorado military every year since then in helping to endorse their Red Ribbon program across the state.

This will be the 6th straight year the Rapids have partnered with the National Guard on the Red Ribbon program.

The helicopter visits will begin Oct. 16 and run through Oct. 27, with approximately 4 schools all up and down the Front Range of Colorado being visited each day by the Rapids Cheerleaders and the Rapids' mascot, RapidMan. They will land in National Guard Blackhawks or "Huey" helicopters or arrive via Humvee at each school, present autographed items at each school, talk with kids about the dangers of drug abuse, pose for photos, and sign autographs for all the schoolchildren.

Area middle and elementary schools can find out more information about how to apply for their school to schedule a visit by calling the Colorado National Guard Counter-Drug Office at 720-847-8303.
