Colorado Rapids News Release
DENVER, CO (Thursday, January 26, 2006)- The Colorado Rapids selected four players in today's Major League Soccer Supplemental draft. Fernando Clavijo's team selected defender Jordan Harvey from UCLA (first round, ninth pick), Denver University defender Liam Girrard (second round, ninth pick, 21st overall), midfielder Keith Caldwell from Brown University (third round, ninth pick, 33rd overall) and midfielder/defender and Colorado Springs native Daniel Wasson (fourth round, second pick, 38th overall).
With the team's first selection (first round, ninth Pick) the Rapids drafted defender Jordan Harvey from UCLA. Harvey, a long-time U.S. Youth National Team member, comes to the Rapids after a standout career at UCLA. He saw action in 69 games in his four-year career and started all 20 games for the Bruins in each of the last two seasons. Harvey was a member of UCLA's 2002 NCAA Championship squad and was part of the first class in UCLA history to win four conference titles. He was part of the Orange County Blue Stars team that shocked the USL Premier Development League's Southwestern Division last year by setting a 15-1-0 record. .
With the second selection (Second round, ninth pick, 21st overall) the Black and Blue drafted Denver University defender Liam Girrard. Girrard, a native of Victoria, Canada, was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division I All-American Soccer Far-West Third Team in December 2005. He finished the year as DU's assist leader (6) and tied for a team-best eight points. Girard also led a defense that limited its opponents to just 9.3 shots per game.
Fernando Clavijo's side added Keith Caldwell from Brown University with the team's third selection (third round, ninth pick, 33rd overall). Caldwell, who at one point in his career trained with Real Sociedad in the Spanish Premier League (U-17), was named an All-Ivy Honorable Mention in 2004, the same season that he played in all 17 games, starting 14, while tying for the team lead in goals scored with five.
The Rapids drafted midfielder Daniel Wasson, a Colorado Springs native, with their final selection (fourth round, second pick, 38th overall). This selection was acquired by the Rapids from Real Salt Lake in a previous trade. Wasson, who started his collegiate career playing for the United States Air Force Academy, joins the Rapids from the University of Tulsa, where he transferred to in 2005. During the summer of 2005, the Liberty High School graduate played in the Professional Development League (PDL) for the Chicago Fire Premier.
On a local Colorado youth soccer note, Wasson's parents are the original founders of the well-known Pride Soccer Club of Colorado Springs, which is an organization that was formed due to the increasing popularity of the sport of soccer, the rapid increase in the number of participants in El Paso County, and the need for a high quality organization to coordinate and supervise a family-oriented soccer program. Today, the Pride Soccer Club is one of the largest youth soccer clubs in the state of Colorado, with approximately 5,400 youth players on over 300 teams.
