Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release
CARSON, Calif. (Thursday, January 26, 2006) - With preseason camp just days away, Chivas USA acquired three players in today's 2006 Major League Soccer Supplemental Draft. With three picks in the four-round draft, conducted via teleconference from the league headquarters in New York, the Red-and-White selected Florida Atlantic forward Andrew Helm with the first pick overall, followed by Princeton midfielder Darren Spicer and Tulsa midfielder Lawson Vaughn. All three are to join Chivas USA as it opens its 2006 preseason camp next Wednesday, February 1, at The Home Depot Center.
"We are pleased to have picked up Drew, Darren and Lawson - three talented young players who we believe will contribute to Chivas USA in the future," said Chivas USA Head Coach Bob Bradley.
With its first-round pick (first overall), Chivas USA selected forward Andrew Helm of Florida Atlantic University. Helm, who hails from Jupiter, Florida, originally started his career at the University of South Florida, where he played two seasons before transferring to Florida Atlantic in 2005. The 6'0", 170-lb. striker impressed many an MLS coach with a strong showing at the 2006 adidas MLS Combine, held in January at The Home Depot Center. A 2003 graduate of Jupiter High School, Helm, 21, was named High School Player of the Year for Southern Florida in 2002. In 2003 he trained for two months with Argentine club River Plate of Buenos Aires. Son of Jim and Kim Helm, Andrew has two sisters, Lisa and Tera, and two brothers, Ryan and James.
With its second-round pick (13th overall), Chivas USA selected midfielder and Southern California native Darren Spicer of Princeton University. Born August 27, 1983 in Upland (San Bernardino County), California, the 5'11", 165-lb. Spicer attended Princeton University, where he was a four-year starter, leading the Tigers in scoring for three seasons (2003-2005), amassing 26 career goals and earning Ivy League Player of the Year honors 2004. A graduate of Diamond Bar High School (Los Angeles County), Spicer majored in politics at Princeton. Son of Bob and Shellie Spicer, Darren has one brother, Joe, and one sister, Lauren.
With its third-round pick (25th overall), Chivas USA selected midfielder Lawson Vaughn of the University of Tulsa. Born April 11, 1984 in Marietta, Georgia, the 5'10", 165-lb. Vaughn began his college career at the University of South Carolina, before transferring to Tulsa in 2004. In four seasons of college eligibility, he played in 88 games (starting 86) recording 6 goals and 14 assists. As a senior at Lassiter High School in his hometown of Marietta, Vaughn was named 5-A Georgia High School Player of the Year in 2002.
Chivas USA, Major League Soccer's Mexican-owned, Los Angeles-based franchise, opens preseason camp under new head coach Bob Bradley next Wednesday, February 1, at The Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Chivas USA kicks off its second MLS campaign on Sunday, April 2, 2006, when it hosts Real Salt Lake at The Home Depot Center. Ticket packages are currently available by calling 1-877-CHIVAS-1 or online via www.CDCHIVASUSA.com.
