Rapdiz fall short in classic pither's duel

(OTTAWA, ON) Friday, July 11, 2008 - Game three of the four game series featured a classic pitcher's duel between Ottawa's Adam Hawes (2-5) and Adam Cox (4-2) for the Surf. The visiting Surf ended up with a 3-2 win to take a 2-1 series lead with game four tomorrow at Rapidz Stadium.

Cox who entered the game leading the CAN-AM league in strikeouts (71), earned the win pitching six innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on 10 hits, with one walk and five strikeouts. Hawes, who is credited with the loss despite a valiant effort allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits, three walks with five strikeouts in 6.2 innings. Walker Whitley earned his fifth save of the season in the win.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning when Jabe Bergeron crushed the Adam Cox offering over the left field wall for a 1-0 Rapidz lead after four innings.

The Rapidz added another in the bottom of the sixth. Thanks to consecutive singles by Bergeron, Jereme Milons and Jake Daubert, the Rapidz extended their lead to 2-0 after six innings.

Responding in the top of the seventh, the Surf scored three runs after two errors by the Rapidz and a two-run home run by Josh Burrus for a 3-2 lead, which held up for the win.

Two Rapidz players became members of the "300 Club" this evening, as Adam Hawes pitched his 300th inning and Jabe Bergeron got his 300th hit in professional baseball.

The Rapidz end their four game series against the Surf Saturday, July 12th at 7:05pm. Arnprior, ON native Tanner Watson (1-1, 3.27 ERA) will pitch for the Rapidz against Rory Shortell (1-1, 6.49 ERA) for the Surf.

The Rapidz have the second series of their home stand beginning Sunday, July 13 at 1:05pm against their national rivals the Quebec Capitales. Sunday will be "Expo Day" at Rapidz Stadium where former Expo greats Jim Fanning, Claude Raymond and Warren Cromartie will be in attendance along with long-time Expo's announcer Jacques Doucet. The promotion will also feature Bill Young, the author of "Remembering the Montreal Expos" in attendance.
