Kitchener, ON - The Kitchener Rangers announced today that the club has completed a trade with the Kingston Frontenacs.
In the trade, Kitchener acquires Saginaw's second-round pick in the 2026 OHL Priority Selection and Windsor's third-round pick in the 2027 OHL Priority Selection. In return, the Rangers trade defenceman Roman Schmidt to Kingston.
"This was an extremely difficult decision to trade Roman," said Rangers General Manager Mike McKenzie. "He has been an integral part of our team for the last couple of years. Unfortunately, time is running out on keeping our four overage players, and at some point, something had to give, or we could risk losing a quality player for nothing. This will give all four over-aged players a chance to play big roles on their respective teams. We wish Roman the best of luck in Kingston this year and in his professional hockey journey after this year."
Schmidt was selected in the second round, 36th overall by Kitchener in the 2019 OHL Priority Selection and since then he has played 146 games for the Rangers scoring 15 goals and 50 assists for 65 points over the last three seasons. Since being reassigned from the Tampa Bay Lightning on November 7th, Schmidt has registered four assists in 14 games.
The Rangers are currently in first place in the OHL with a six-point padding in front of the Soo Greyhounds who come to The Aud on Friday for the Rangers' final home game before the holiday break. Don't miss the action from the two hottest teams in the OHL as great seats are still available and can be purchased at The Box Office at The Aud Sponsored by White Way Plumbing or online.
