Connecticut Whale News Release
New York, January 16, 2012 - New York Rangers President and General Manager Glen Sather announced today that forward Kris Newbury has been assigned to the Connecticut Whale of the American Hockey League (AHL).
Newbury, 29, was credited with two hits and won 2-3 faceoffs (67%) in 6:19 of ice time last night at Montreal, following his recall from Connecticut earlier in the day. He returns to Connecticut where he has registered 15 goals and 21 assists for 36 points, along with 80 penalty minutes in 30 games this season. He led Connecticut in goals, points and shots on goal (108), was tied for the team lead in assists and penalty minutes, and was tied for third in power play goals (four) at the time of his recall. He was also tied for ninth in the AHL in points, and was tied for 14th in the league in goals and assists. Newbury posted a season-high, eight-game point streak from December 16 vs. Bridgeport to January 2 at Portland, registering 17 points (five goals, 12 assists) over the span. He began the season with a hat trick in the season opener on October 8 at Adirondack.
The Brampton, Ontario native was acquired by the Rangers from Detroit, in exchange for Jordan Owens on March 3, 2010. He was originally selected by the San Jose Sharks as a fifth round choice, 139th overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
