Kitchener Rangers News Release
The Kitchener Rangers fell 5-2 to the Sudbury Wolves in exhibition play on Friday night. First year Rangers Nick Magyar and Mike Davies each recorded their first of the preseason in the loss.
The Rangers took a 1-0 lead near the eight-minute mark of the opening frame. Freshman Nick Magyar notched his first of the preseason, snapping a shot from the circle over the blocker-side shoulder of Wolves starter Taylor Dupuis. Assists on the play were credited to veteran forwards Josh Sterk and Eric Ming.
Sudbury out-shot Kitchener 14-13 through the opening 20 minutes of play.
The Wolves got on the board less than a minute into the second period, leveling the score at 1-1. Czech import Dominik Kahun raced to the net on an odd-man rush, collected a pass from centre Ray Huether and fired high over the shoulder of Rangers' netminder Jack Moylan. The goal was his first of the exhibition season.
Sudbury added a second goal eight minutes later to jump into the lead. Third year forward Jacob Harris beat Moylan between the legs to record his first of the preseason. Rearguard Evan de Haan collected an assist on the play.
Huether earned his second point of the night with a power play goal, sliding the puck under Moylan at the 13:14 mark of the middle frame. Kahun also picked up his second point with a helper. The second assist was credited to veteran winger Nathan Pancel.
Pancel added a goal of his own less than three minutes later, backhanding the puck into the Kitchener net to extend the Wolves' lead to 4-1.
Sudbury continued to lead shots on goal, with an 11-6 advantage in the second period.
The Rangers cut their deficit in half five minutes into the third period. Rookie Mike Davies chipped a backhand shot between the netminder and the goal post to make it 4-2 Wolves. Davies was Kitchener's first round pick in the 2013 Priority Selection and his goal was his first in a Rangers jersey.
The Wolves added to their lead in the final second of play, when Jimmy McDowell's big shot found the back of the net. The overage blueliner's goal came with 0.6 seconds remaining on the clock.
The Rangers' exhibition road trip continues Saturday afternoon in Temiscaming, Quebec where they will meet the North Bay Battalion at 2:00pm.
