Jason Akeson led the Kitchener Rangers to a 6-5 victory over the Kingston Frontenacs in their 2008-09 season opener tonight at The Aud.
Rangers assistant captain Jeff Skinner led the way at the 4:38 mark with a helper from Mike Mascioli and Patric Andersson. Midway through the period, Kingston's Zach Harnden was waiting on the Rangers doorstep and buried a power play goal to tie the score 1-1.
A 1-1 tie at the end of the first period turned into a 5-4 lead for Kingston by the end of the second. Brian Lashoff knocked in Kingston's second power play goal of the game at the 8:08 mark. The Rangers Jason Akeson replied just over a minute later with a shot from the top of the crease to level scoring 2-2. Ethan Werek netted a shorthanded goal to put the Frontenacs ahead at the 11:18 mark. Jeremy Morin evened things out once more on a Rangers power play goal at the 15:37 mark. Kingston scored twice late in the period to push ahead of Kitchener 5-3. Skinner closed the gap with 13 seconds left on the clock in the second period.
