Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
Brampton, ON - The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors opened up their regular season schedule tonight with a trip just up the road to the home of cross-town rivals, the Brampton Battalion. The Majors were on fire tonight, coming out on top with a 3-2 win. As a result Mississauga's record now stands at 1-0-0-0.
The night certainly saw a number of key Majors players re-joining the lineup after returning from NHL camps including Cameron Gaunce (who wore the "C" on his jersey), Tim Billingsley, Casey Cizikas and Brett Flemming. Stuart Percy, the Majors first-round pick this summer, was also seen back in action as he returned from an injury that kept him off the ice during exhibition.
Mississauga's Brendan McCann got the opening goal at 6:31 in the 1st period to make it 1-0 with Ryan Lopes and Rob Flick picking up the assists. Then, Stephon Thorne tied it up for Brampton at 14:20 to end the frame. Craig Moore and Brad Albert were the helpers.
It was all Majors in the 2nd period as the squad went ahead 3-1. First, Jordan Mayer connected on the power-play at 6:21 on an unassisted play. Shortly after Cizikas put the puck into Brampton's net at 7:17, marking his return to the Majors roster. Providing the passes were Blake Parlett and Percy.
The Battalion answered in the 3rd period with Sean Jones getting the lone tally at 10:37 but the visitors held onto the one-goal lead to take the victory. The assists went to Matt MacLeod and Sam Carrick.
JP Anderson started between the pipes for the Majors and blocked 27 shots while Patrick Killeen turned aside 25 shots for the Battalion. Mississauga went 1 for 3 on the power-play while Brampton finished 0 for 6 on the night. The three stars of tonight's game were Anderson (1st), Killeen (2nd) and Mayer (3rd).
The Majors continue their road trip next weekend with a contest against the London Knights on Friday (September 25) at 7:30 p.m. Then Mississauga visits the Sarnia Sting on the following evening at 7:30 p.m.
Home opener takes place on Friday, October 2 against the Battalion at 7:30 p.m. A complete list of the Majors 2009-10 regular season schedule is available at the Majors website (www.stmichaelsmajors.com).
