Kitchener Rangers News Release

The Kitchener Rangers traveled on Highway 7 for the final time this regular season to face their rival, The Guelph Storm. The Rangers were looking to build some momentum this weekend as they headed into the playoffs.

Neither team had scored up to the midway point of the opening frame, but both teams had multiple chances. Guelph had a powerplay opportunity that the Ranger penalty killers were able to kill off. Shortly after, Guelph scored with three minutes remaining in the period, grabbing the 1-0 lead. Reid Valade responded immediately for the Rangers, snapping his 30th goal in to tie the game 1-1.

Guelph carried most of the momentum at the beginning of the 2nd period, but Pavel Cajan stood tall in the Rangers net. Carson Rehkopf and Mitchell Martin took penalties giving Guelph a 5-on-3 opportunity. The Rangers penalty killers and Cajan contributed to killing off both penalties. The Rangers earned their chance to have a powerplay off a Guelph tripping penalty. They did not capitalize but created pressure on the Guelph defenders. Pavel Cajan made 33 of 34 saves up to the end of the 2nd period, keeping the game tied 1-1.

Two minutes into the 3rd, Carson Rehkopf scored his 18th goal of the season on the powerplay, making it 2-1. Guelph would respond to tie the game again, this time 2-2. Navrin Mutter believed he made the game 3-2 late, but after review, the play was offside. With a minute remaining in the game, the Rangers were given a powerplay chance. Regulation solved nothing and overtime was needed to find a winner in the game. The Rangers started the overtime period with powerplay time remaining.

Guelph's Danny Zhilkin scored to win the game 3-2. We have one final tune-up game tomorrow in Owen Sound before playoffs. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.
