Brantford Bulldogs News Release
HAMILTON, ONTARIO. For the last regular season home game, the FirstOntario Centre had a huge crowd to cheer on the Bulldogs one last time before the playoffs. Coming in strong after the win in Barrie last night, the Bulldogs looked to hit 50 wins for the first time in Hamilton hockey history.
After a back and forth open to the game with the teams trading chances, the Bulldogs broke the ice as Jorian Donovan fired a shot from the right point that Ryan Winterton got his stick on to put past Rosenzweig for his 20th of the season at 6:48, with Patrick Thomas picking up his 21st helper, giving the Bulldogs the 1-0 lead. Just 27 seconds later Lawson Sherk picked up his 12th of the season at 7:15 through Donovan with a near mirror image right point drive that Sherk was able to tip home, with Cole Brown getting the secondary helper, making the goal spread 2-0 Bulldogs. With 4 minutes left of the first Matteo Drobac made a showstopping save robbing IceDogs sniped Daniil Guschin on a breakaway only to be answered by Rosenzweig standing tall on a McTavish-White 2-on-1. With time expiring in the opening frame, Avery Hayes broke free on a Ryan Humphrey, getting stopped by Rosenzweig on the breakaway but Logan Morrison collected the rebound, delivering it to Hayes to slam home for his 41st at 19:20 giving the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead they would take to the locker room.
The second period opened with the IceDogs pressing to get back into the game, picking up momentum with offensive zone attack time only to be turned aside time and again due to the wall put up by Drobac in the Hamilton crease. Going end to end while on the powerplay Pano Fimis broke Drobac's shutout bid to put the IceDogs on the board at 9:16 with a spectacular individual effort. Spending time in both ends, both teams looked to score the next goal. The offences would be silenced through the rest of the middle stanza with Drobac & Rosenzweig turning aside a combine 21 of 22 shots on goal between both teams with Drobac keeping Hamilton firmly in front 3-1 through 40 while Rosenzweig looked to give his team a chance in the third.
Opening the final frame, the Bulldogs found their insurance with Gavin White recording his 10th goal of the season sliding the puck passed Rosenzweig at 2:20 from the pass of Mason McTavish to give the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead. The IceDogs just wouldn't quit however piling up 13 third period shots, the best coming from former Bulldog Liam Van Loon coming out of the penalty box and breaking through with Matteo Drobac once more keeping his former teammate off the board. As the final horn sounded on the final home game of the regular season, the Bulldogs recorded their historic 50th win of the year with Matteo Drobac turning aside 34 of 35 IceDogs shot in the victory.
The Hamilton Bulldogs are headed across the border for an Easter Sunday, April 17th, match up against the Erie Otters at the Erie Insurance Arena at 2:00 p.m.
