
Rangers Assign Pair Of Rookies

CHARLOTTE, NC-The Charlotte Checkers announced today that forward Chris Chappell and defenseman Tysen Dowzak have been assigned to the team by the New York Rangers.
Chappell, 21, joins the Checkers after skating four seasons for the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League. In 2008-09, he scored a team-leading 38 goals and 76 points in 68 games. He also led the team in power-play goals with 18 and was named to the OHL All-Star Classic. He was rewarded over the summer with an NHL contract with the Rangers.
The 6-foot-4, 210-pound winger from Pickering, Ontario tallied 70 goals and 84 assists in 248 career OHL games.
Dowzak, 21, returns to the Checkers after spending the majority of last year with the Kelowna Rockets of the Western Hockey League. In 54 games with the Rockets, he collected 14 assists and 77 penalty minutes and helped the team capture a WHL Championship and earn a Memorial Cup Finals appearance.
In 220 career WHL games, the 6-foot-5, 210-pound defenseman has tallied four goals, 34 assists and 304 penalty minutes. He skated in four games with the Checkers and one game with the American Hockey League's Hartford Wolfpack to begin 2008-09.
The Checkers have also announced that forwards Jaime Zimmel, Mike Taylor, Derek Couture and defensemen Ethan Graham, Kevin Schaeffer and T.J. Reynolds have been released from AHL training camps and have returned to Charlotte.
The Checkers' schedule is now available and they are getting ready for their 17th season of play as a member of the ECHL and 16th as an affiliate of the New York Rangers. In the team's 16-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 12 times including five consecutive playoff appearances to date. Season tickets are on sale now.
