Rampage Slip Past Stars in Overtime, 3-2
March 27, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Texas Stars News Release
SAN ANTONIO - The Texas Stars and San Antonio Rampage traded goals throughout the game, but Mikko Rantanen was the hero in overtime to give the Rampage a 3-2 win on Easter Sunday in front of 3,919 in attendance at AT&T Center.
Matej Stransky scored both Texas goals in the loss. Despite the overtime loss, Jack Campbell stopped 34 of 37 shots in his first AHL start since Dec. 19. Through 13 meetings this season between the two in-state rivals, Texas (36-23-7-3) has won seven and San Antonio (28-33-8-0) has won six.
The Stars return home Tuesday to host the Bakersfield Condors at 7:30 p.m. CST.
Rantanen's overtime-winner came on a wrist shot at the top of the slot that beat Campbell and banked off the crossbar for the rookie's 22nd of the season. It was Rantanen's 16th point in eight games against the Stars this season.
Stransky wasted no time getting Texas on the board after burying his first of the game just 21 seconds into the first period. Jason Dickinson set up Stransky in the right circle for the goal, and Brendan Ranford picked up the second assist. San Antonio responded at 4:49 of the first on an odd-man rush with a one-timer goal from Garret Thompson to knot the score.
In period two, the Rampage jumped in front when Nate Guenin's point shot was deflected past Campbell at 2:04. With just over three minutes remaining in the period, Stransky drilled a slap shot from the left circle past San Antonio's Spencer Martin to even things up again and set up the overtime finish.
Neither team tallied a power play goal as Texas went 0-for-3 and the Rampage went 0-for-5.
Martin stopped 24 of 26 shots in the win for the Rampage.
The Texas Stars are the primary development affiliate of the NHL's Dallas Stars and currently in their seventh season at Cedar Park Center. Full season, 24-game and 12-game ticket packages for the 2015-16 campaign are on sale now. For more information, call (512) GO-STARS (467-8277) or visit TexasStars.com.
