San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Barracuda scored twice on the power play and once into an empty net, while goaltender Aaron Dell stopped all 26 shots he faced in a 3-0 Barracuda win over the San Diego Gulls on Saturday night at SAP Center in San Jose.
The Gulls' three-game road winning streak and seven-game road points streak came to an end as San Diego (33-22-2-2) was shut out for the first time since January 20 against Ontario, a stretch of twenty games. Combined with a Texas 6-5 shootout win against Milwaukee, the Stars leapfrogged the Gulls by .003 percentage points into second place in the AHL Pacific Division.
Nikolay Goldobin (13:23 into the first period) and Joakim Ryan (1:19 into the third period) each converted power play chances for the Barracuda (28-21-7-3), who maintained their grapple for the final playoff spot in the Pacific with the Charlotte Checkers. The two teams are less than a thousandth of a percentage point separated in the standings.
Trevor Parkes added his fifteenth goal of the season into an empty net with 47 seconds left in the game as the Barracuda won for the first time on home ice against the Gulls in five tries.
Playing without center Chris Mueller and defenseman Shea Theodore, the Gulls power play, ranked 2nd in the AHL coming into action on Saturday, went 0-for-6 on the night.
Anton Khudobin (24 saves on 26 shots faced) made a handful of acrobatic saves in the first two periods to allow the Gulls to hold a 1-0 deficit through forty minutes, including the denial of a 2-on-1 outmanned rush by the Barracuda while short-handed in the second period.
The two teams will meet again at 3 p.m. on Easter Sunday from SAP Center.
NOTES: Bryan Lerg led the Barracuda with three assists...Jeremy Morin added a pair of helpers, both on the power play, as San Jose went 2-for-5 with the man advantage...attendance at SAP Center was 6,731 on "Beach Night".
THREE STARS
1st Star: SJ Aaron Dell (26 saves, shutout); 2nd Star: SJ Joakim Ryan (1-0=1, +1 rating); 3rd Star: SJ Nikolay Goldobin (1-0=1, 5 shots)
