Syracuse Silver Knights News Release
SYRACUSE, New York - Tommy Tanner's squad was looking to bounce back Saturday evening after a tough road loss to the St. Louis Ambush on Friday morning. But an overtime goal just :36 into the final frame woul spoil the Silver Knight weekend. The Rampage got the best of the Silver Knights 8-7 in a high scoring back and forth match.
The first quarter was a very physical one but one with little fouls and little goals. Both sides used the early part of the first quarter to feel out their opponent and adjust to a game plan. Neither team was able to get many scoring chances but the Cedar Rapids Rampage were able to connect on one of their few chances. The Rampage caught the Silver Knights with an odd man break and Neto was able to find an open Bobby Hurwitz just 8:27 into the quarter. Both sides would remain scoreless after that and the Rampage would head into the second quarter with a 1-0 lead.
After a quick intermission and a period of low scoring, the second quarter was played to a much different tune with 4 goals coming in the frame. The Silver Knights were able to capitalize on two power play opportunities with goals from Antonio Manfut and Darren Toby. Joey Tavernese was able to knock in his second goal as a Silver Knight in as many games to extend the Silver Knight lead even further. The Rampage were able to get 1 more goal past OQuinn before the halftime buzzer sounded cutting the Silver Knight lead to 1 goal as the Knights went into halftime with a 3-2 lead.
Another 4 goal third quarter would see the two sides go back and forth scoring two goals apiece. The second half would get off to the fastest start for the Silver Knights on the season scoring just 8 seconds into the half on a goal by Antonio Manfut, his second of the match. Cedar Rapids would respond with back to back goals in the 11th and 15th minutes the two Rampage goals were scored by Jacob Johnson and Elmo Neto. But just 8 seconds after the last Rampage goal the Silver Knights would catch a sleeping Rampage team and Joey Tavernese would score his second goal of the game as well. The Silver Knights would take that 5-4 lead heading into the final quarter in the exciting matchup.
The 4th quarter provided even more excitement and goal scoring. The Rampage would open up the scoring just 3:54 into the quarter tying the game up. The two sides would go back and forth trading goals until it the Silver Knights would gain a 1 goal lead thanks to Joey Travernese completing his hat trick with 9 minutes to go in the match. But the Rampage were not about to fold over and didn't hold back. A riffle of a shot hit to top post, hit Bryan Oquinn's end line and was called a goal by the officials on the field. Jacob Johnson's goal with just 4 minutes remaining would tie the game at 7-7. The teams would remained locked in at that score until heading into the over time period. But not before Vitale of the Silver Knights would pick up an elbow call in front of the net giving the Rampage a powerplay heading into overtime.
The Rampage would take advantage of the extra man quickly in the extra frame scoring just :33 seconds into the overtime period. The game winning goal was score by Jacob Johnson, who also had a hat trick on the night for the Rampage.
