Rampage Fall Short in Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, CA - Joey LaLeggia tallied a goal and an assist in his return to Bakersfield but Joe Gambardella's third period goal held as the game-winner, as the Bakersfield Condors (5-4-0) skated to a 3-2 win over the San Antonio Rampage (3-10-0) on Sunday night at Rabobank Arena.

Gambardella redirected a Brad Malone shot past Rampage goaltender Jordan Binnington at 5:50 of the third period for his fourth goal of the season. The Rampage logged ten shots on goal in the third period and earned a late power play with 4:46 remaining, but could not find the equalizer against Condors goaltender Shane Starrett.

LaLeggia appeared in 198 games with the Condors over the past three seasons and was playing his first game as a visitor at Rabobank Arena. He gave the Rampage a 2-1 lead at 3:34 of the second period with his second goal of the season. Nolan Stevens won a physical battle behind the Condors net and slid the puck in front for LaLeggia to give the Rampage the lead.

The Rampage tied the score 1-1 late in the first period, with LaLeggia starting the attack on the right wing. Curling to the far boards, LaLeggia fed the trailer Stevens in the high slot and he immediately fed Bobby MacIntyre for a tap-in at the back post at 17:34, MacIntyre's first goal of the season and his first in the American Hockey League.

With San Antonio ahead 2-1, the Condors tied the game in the final minute of the second period. A Rampage turnover at their own blue line sent Malone in alone on Binnington. Binnington made the initial save, but then was bowled over by Malone as the two players and the puck entered the net. After review, it was ruled that a Rampage player had pushed Malone into Binnington, allowing the goal to count at 19:30 of the second period.

Logan Day opened the scoring with a power play goal at 6:17 of the first period, a point shot past Binnington for his second goal of the season. The Condors have scored power play goals in six consecutive games.

Binnington made 32 saves in the loss. LaLeggia, Stevens, and MacIntyre all recorded two points on the night.

The Rampage return to action on Saturday night at the HEB Center at Cedar Park for their first of 14 meetings this season with the Texas Stars. Puck-drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT, with the game available on The Ticket 760AM and on AHLTV.
