Ramirez Hits Game Winner as 66ers Win

San Bernardino, CA - The Inland Empire 66ers (55-58, 23-20) moved one game closer to clinching a playoff position in the Cal League South as the beat the Lake Elsinore Storm (58-56, 26-18) by a final score of 7-4.

The Storm had the early lead after three innings as they were up 2-0 behind the pitching of Nick Schmidt, but the 66ers were able to get to him and tie up the game in the bottom of the fourth. After Carlos Ramirez looped an RBI single to left field bringing Kole Calhoun home to score on the play, Adam Younger lifted a sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring Dillon Baird.

Inland Empire then took the lead in the fifth inning. Matt Long lead off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and then scored on an RBI bloop single to right field from Dwayne Bailey.

After the Storm regained the lead in the top of the seventh inning, the 66ers were quick to answer scoring three of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Carlos Ramirez had the big hit in the frame. With two outs, he smashed a 2 RBI double into deep left-centerfield which brought in the winning runs and gave Inland Empire the 6-4 lead.

The 66ers tacked on an insurance run in the eighth when Matt Long lined a ball into centerfield scoring David Harris. Kevin Johnson picked up his third victory of the year going two and two-thirds innings in relief. Johnny Hellweg (4-4, 4.28 ERA) will take the mound for Inland Empire on Tuesday night opposite Jerry Sullivan (6-6, 5.83 ERA) of Lake Elsinore as the 66ers look to sweep the Storm.
