Ramirez Delivers for Missions
August 29, 2018 - Texas League (TL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release
Emmanuel Ramirez and three relievers combined on a four-hitter as San Antonio notched a much-needed 1-0 win over Frisco in Friday night's series finale at Wolff Stadium.
In dire need of a victory, the Missions turned to Ramirez, who was making just his third Double-A start. The 24-year-old right-hander's first task on the night was to prevent a fast start from the opposition. Many times, during the club's recent funk, the opponent had struck for early runs.
In Friday's finale, Ramirez was up to the task, setting the RoughRiders down in order in each of the first two innings. After working around Eliezer Alvarez's two-out single in the third, Ramirez would encounter his first jam of the night in the fourth. Jose Cardona and Michael De Leon led off the frame with singles, putting runners on the corners. Unfazed, Ramirez kept the game scoreless, getting Destin Hood to hit into a fielder's choice before Juremi Profar banged into an inning-ending double play.
Mound opponent Edgar Arredondo was no slouch either Friday night, limiting San Antonio to just three hits through four. However, in the fifth, the Missions were able to muster the game's lone rally. At first, though, the scoring chance looked to be denied as Hudson Potts was gunned out at home by Cardona following a Peter Van Gansen double to right center. Fortunately, for San Antonio, Michael Gettys was able to eventually knock in Van Gansen with a single to left off Arredondo (0-3).
After stranding a pair in the sixth, Ramirez (2-1) turned it over to the pen. The trio of Trevor Megill, Elliot Ashbeck and Andres Munoz combined on three innings of hitless ball to wrap up San Antonio's league-leading 13th shutout of the season. Munoz pumped out five different 103 MPH pitches in the ninth to the delight of the sellout crowd of 6,678.
San Antonio (27-31, 69-59) begins a big seven-game road trip Saturday with the first of three against Corpus Christi (34-25, 77-51). First pitch from Whataburger Field is slated for 7:05 PM. Lake Bachar (3-7, 5.21) will get the ball for the Missions in the series opener, while the Hooks counter with fellow righty Corbin Martin (7-2, 2.86).
