Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Waterloo Black Hawks won the third period but not the game Friday, falling to Team USA 4-2 in Ann Arbor.
Down 4-0, Gunner Hughes rushed to the net just 1:45 into the third and flipped a shot under the crossbar. Waterloo closed within a pair at 13:03 when Tyler Zepeda slid a puck into an open side off the rebound of an Anthony Day chance. Playing four-on-four, Day had stolen the puck at center, setting up a two-on-one.
A pair of goals just 14 seconds apart set the Black Hawks behind Team USA before the midpoint of the opening period. Zac Larraza and Reid Boucher each scored on pointblank chances at 6:06 and 6:20. Boucher flipped in another opportunity with 1:07 left before intermission.
In the second, the Hawks battled Team USA to a standstill until a bad bounce cost them with 15 seconds remaining. On a power play, Connor Murphy cleared the puck; goaltender C.J. Motte came out of the net to play it between the circles, but it hopped over his stick and trickled over the goal line.
The Black Hawks next game is Saturday in Youngstown. The matchup is critical to both the Hawks' and Phantoms' playoff aspirations. Game time is 6:30 Central.
