Sanford Mainers News Release
SANFORD, Maine - On a day that was decimated by inclement weather, the Sanford Mainers lost to the North Adams SteepleCats 6-3 in game one of a doubleheader before the weather got the best of game two just three pitches in.
Sanford took the field trailing to North Adams 3-1 in the opener, which was scheduled as the conclusion of a game that was suspended due to rain back on the Fourth of July. The Mainers traveled to face the SteepleCats on the holiday and only played one inning, though it was an eventful one.
An RBI single from Devan Bade (Binghamton) that gave the Mainers a 1-0 lead before a two-RBI double by Sam Tackett (Virginia Tech) and sacrifice fly from Chad Born (Coastal Carolina) had the SteepleCats up 3-1.
Despite the 17-day delay before the second inning, the bats of the Mainers kept their momentum alive in their first turn of the day at the plate.
Logan Poteet (Vanderbilt), Devin Russell (Maryland) and Matt Miceli (Stony Brook) each singled to load the bases with just one out being recorded in the process. Poteet scored and Russell was thrown out trying to tie the game when Kevin Skagerlind (UMass Amherst) knocked a single into center field.
Though Skagerlind's single could not tie the game in the second, it was the second-year Mainer who helped put the tying run on the board in the fifth.
Skagerlind singled to open the frame and advanced to second an at-bat later on a groundout by Cal Hewett (Vanderbilt). With the Massachusetts native leading off second, Nick Roselli (Binghamton) drove a double down the left field line to even the score at 3-3.
The game would not stay tied for long though as Seamus Barrett (Loyola Marymount), who got the ball to start Friday's portion of the game, allowed a two-out single to Jake Reinisch (Wake Forest). Reinisch moved up to second an at-bat later on a wild pitch that came as ball three of DM Jefferson's (Notre Dame) walk.
Another wild pitch allowed Reinisch to take off for third base. Russell tried to make the recovery throw to catch the SteepleCats outfielder stealing, but he threw the ball into left field, which allowed the go-ahead run to score.
Barrett worked into and out of trouble in the seventh inning to keep the game in striking distance for his offense. The 6-foot-7, right-handed pitcher allowed singles to Nathan Lincoln (Marist), Tackett and Jefferson to load the bases.
With two on and two outs, Barrett worked a groundout of Cedric Rose (UMass Lowell) to end the frame and his night. The Kennebunk, Maine native worked six innings allowing six hits and one unearned run while striking out eight but left in line for the loss.
Jack Toomey (Holy Cross) and Eddie Eisert (Virginia Tech) found ways on base in the top of the eighth, but they were left stranded by Jagger Jefferis (Eastern Michigan).
As Nick Thompson (Colby College) attempted to throw his warmup pitches for the bottom of the eighth, the steadily falling rain was met with lightning and the game was put into a weather delay. That delay proved to be a lengthy one at around three hours, but the two sides resumed play shortly before the clock struck nine, nearly five hours after the game started.
Jake Poindexter (Lipscomb) took the mound instead of Thompson for the Mainers. Poindexter allowed the first three batters he faced to reach base on a single and two walks.
The first of the three batters, Sam Sherman (Merrimack), came around to score on a wild pitch. That wild pitch also allowed the second of the batters, Jack Reynolds (Clemson) to advance to third, where he would leave when Aidan Stewart (Delaware) sent a ball into the outfield air for a sacrifice fly.
Trailing 6-3, the green and yellow put runners on the corners with one out, but Jefferis, who returned to the mound after the delay, got Bade and Toomey out to end the game.
Looking to put that loss behind them, the Mainers sent Jack Mullen (Bowdoin) out to the bump. Mullen went ahead of Lincoln 1-2, but before he could deliver the punchout pitch, a flash of lightning sent the game into a delay. That delay became a suspension as the game was called just a short time later as the rain began to fall in bunches again.
Sanford looks to rebound tomorrow in a crucial matchup against the Vermont Mountaineers, who lead the North Division with the regular season winding down.
