Tacoma Rainiers News Release

Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers relied on the long ball to power their way to a 17-8 win in their series finale with Portland at Cheney Stadium on Sunday.

For the second time in their last four games, the Rainiers belted seven home runs, tying the season-high mark they set against the Beavers earlier in the series on August 28.

Among Tacoma's home run haul, infielder Matt Mangini and designated hitter Brad Nelson each posted their first multi-home run games of the season after each went deep twice. Dustin Ackley jump started the Rainiers' power outing with his second first-inning leadoff home run of the season.

As late as the top of the fourth, the game was tied at 5-5 before the Rainiers took a one-run lead off catcher Eliezer Alfonzo's solo home run in the bottom of the inning. Tacoma proceeded to score 11 runs on 11 hits over the next four frames, including two four-run outbursts in the fifth and eighth innings.

Nelson was the headliner in an explosive day at the plate for the Rainiers offense. The designated hitter complimented his pair of home runs with five RBI and three runs scored. Shortstop Scott Kazmar led the Beavers, going 5-for-5 with a solo home run in the first inning.

Tacoma reliever Levale Speigner earned the win for the Rainiers, his fifth of the season, after tossing 2.2 scoreless innings of work out of the bullpen with one strikeout.

Portland starter Cesar Carrillo was dealt his 14th loss of the season with the Beavers, surrendering 10 runs on 10 hits over 4.1 innings, with two walks and three strikeouts.

Following their win today, the Rainiers extended their lead over Salt Lake for first place in the Pacific Coast League Pacific Northern Division to 3.5 games. The Bees lost to Colorado Springs 10-9 earlier in the day.

Tacoma begins the first game of a four-game set with Colorado Springs at 7pm on Monday, rounding out the team's final homestand of the regular season. The Rainiers are scheduled to send left-hander Mauricio Robles to the mound in the series opener, with left-hander Josh Muecke slated to start for the Sky Sox.
