Wilmington Sharks News Release
The Wilmington Sharks (7-6) hadn't even played three innings with the Fayetteville Swampdogs (3-9) when a thunderstorm hit and paused play for over an hour, but when the game resumed, the Sharks emerged victorious by a score of 6-5.
Just before the delay, the Sharks had taken the lead. Ryan Jeffers (UNC Wilmington) got things started with an RBI double, followed by an Alec Bohm (Wichita State) RBI double. Ward Coleman (Davidson) would later single home a run to give the Sharks the 3-0 advantage.
After the delay, the Sharks scored a run in each the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Chris Graham (UNC Greensboro) brought home a run in the fifth on an infield single and Bohm collected another RBI in the sixth when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Michael Hungate (Oral Roberts) scored a run in the seventh after an error allowed Brett Smith (Bucknell) to reach.
The Swampdogs tried to mount a comeback in the late innings. A three run home run in the seventh and two more in the eighth made it a tight game down the stretch, but Steven Powels came in and shut things down to get a five out save.
The win went to Mike Castellani (4-1). He pitched on both sides of the delay, throwing seven innings, allowing three runs on four hits, and struck out six. Peter Moore (0-3) took the loss, pitching three innings and surrendering three runs on seven hits, one walk and striking out three. Steven Powels (3) came in the eighth inning with two runners in scoring position and one out. He worked one and two thirds perfect innings with one strikeout for the five out save.
The Sharks will be back home on Thursday to host Morehead City again, during which it'll be Thirsty Thursday. The game will start at 7:05pm.
