Pilots Rout Generals

June 16, 2016 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Peninsula Pilots News Release

HAMPTON, Va.- The Peninsula Pilots prevailed against the Petersburg Generals 14-2 on Thursday night at War Memorial Stadium.

The Pilots were led offensive with big nights from Devin Mahoney (Saint Louis), who went 2-for-3 with three RBI, and Logan Augustine (Lincoln Memorial), who had two hits and two RBI.

The Pilots got off to a good start with a three run second inning. Charlie Cody (Virginia) led off the inning by reaching first base on an error, and Mahoney scored him in the next at-bat with a double up the right field line. Mahoney crossed the plate himself after a single from Augustine. Another single from Evan Fernandez (Jacksonville) advanced Augustine to second, and a single from Josh Close (Liberty) allowed Augustine to score, making it a 3-0 game.

Petersburg responded in the third inning with a run of their own. After reaching on an error, Cody Doyle (Sacred Heart) advanced to third on two consecutive groundouts, and then Joe Schrimpf (Arkansas State) plated him on a line drive that ricocheted off Pilots' pitcher Brett Smith's (Old Dominion) glove.

The Pilots' bats exploded in the fourth inning. Fernandez hit a one-out single and advanced to second on a throwing error to put a man in scoring position. He advanced to third on a ground ball from Close, and advanced home on a wild pitch. After a walk from Joe Poduslenko (Seton Hall) and a single from Cole Austin (West Virginia), Kurt Sinnen (Old Dominion) plated Poduslenko on a single to right field. Austin scored in the next at-bat after a throwing error caused by Sinnen stealing second base. Sinnen then scored on a single from Cody. In the next at-bat, Mahoney smacked his first home run of the year, a two-run shot to right-center that plated Cody and himself. This inning broke the game open, making it a 9-1 game.

The Pilots pitching also shined in this game, particularly the outings from starter Smith and reliever Jake Crawford (Furman). Smith threw four innings, striking out four while only allowing three hits and a run. Crawford followed Smith and pitched three scoreless innings, striking out four without allowing a hit.

Two scoreless innings set the stage for another offensive showcase from the Pilots in the seventh inning. After walking, Andrew Yacyk (Liberty) advanced to third on a single from Drake McNamara (Southern Indiana) and a throwing error from Petersburg. Yacyk then scored on a single from Augustine, and Close walked to load the bases. In the next at-bat, McNamara scored after Poduslenko was hit with a pitch. Kyle McPherson (James Madison) added the knockout blow of the inning, slapping a single to right field that cleared the bases aided by a Generals error. These were the Pilots' final runs of the game, making the score 14-1

Petersburg added one more in the ninth after a single from Ryan Cox (Kutztown) and a one-run double from Caleb Hicks (Murray State), but it was too little too late for the Generals as the Pilots prevailed 14-2.

The Pilots travel to Morehead City Friday night, but come back home Saturday to face off against Forest City for Wynne Ford/Volvo Night.
