July 27, 2016 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
North Carolina FC News Release
Ottawa, Ont.- The Carolina RailHawks (2W-1D-2L; 11pts; 6th place) fell to Ottawa Fury FC (2W-0D-3L; 6 pts; 7th place) 2-0 in an exciting contest tonight at TD Place. Carolina had five starters miss the trip. Nazmi Albadawi, Connor Tobin and Matt Watson were unable to travel due to injury. James Marcelin and Omar Bravo also did not make the trip.
The RailHawks were eager to begin their series of road games with a win. From the opening whistle, they were aggressive and hungry for a goal. In the third minute, Marvin Ceballos took advantage of an early foul by driving in a sharp free kick and forcing a corner. Ceballos stepped up again for the set piece and sent in an excellent cross. Austin da Luz met it with a powerful header, but Ottawa goalkeeper Romuald Peiser was able to make the save. The RailHawks continued to test the Fury goalkeeper early on, while Matt Fondy and Tiyi Shipalane also created chances and shots.
Despite a bright start for Carolina, Ottawa found the net first. Carl Haworth put his name on the scoresheet in the eighth minute after capitalizing on some miscommunication from Carolina's defense. The Fury began to make an impression on the game, opening up in the attack and creating multiple opportunities. Akira Fitzgerald was called into action in the 24th minute by a dangerous Fury cross, which he denied with an impressive punch.
The RailHawks looked like they were going to level the score late in the first half. Fondy had a dangerous effort in the 32nd minute when he beat a defender in the Fury's box with a quick bit of skill, but his shot was intercepted and cleared before it could cross the line. Fondy met a cross from Steven Miller in the 36th minute, but his header went just over the bar. In the 38th minute, Shipalane nearly connected with a long ball from da Luz, but Peiser was quick off his line to collect the ball.
Down a goal at the start of the second half, the RailHawks found themselves on the receiving end of another tally. A free kick from Ottawa's Bryan Olivera took an unfortunate bounce off of Drew Beckie's arm and found the back of Carolina's net.
The RailHawks fought and continued to put pressure on Ottawa's back line as Carolina's forwards peppered the Fury's goal with chances. In the 69th minute a free kick from da Luz barely cleared the goal posts, fixing the result at 2-0 for the home team.
