Ottawa Fury FC News Release
OTTAWA, ON - The Ottawa Fury FC secured their second consecutive win and returned to the win column at TD Place by defeating the visiting Carolina RailHawks 2-0 on a hot and humid night at TD Place.
Forward Carl Haworth struck in the 8th minute for his fifth goal of the season, finishing off a fine run from the midfield that saw him beat two Carolina defenders with a low, precise strike past a diving Akira Fitzgerald in the Carolina goal. Ottawa doubled their lead early in the second half as Bryan Olivera's long free kick whipped through the box and struck for Fury FC defender Drew Beckie that deflected into his own goal.
After scoring just once in their first three contests of the Fall Season, Fury FC have discovered their scoring prowess with back-to-back 2-0 wins pulling them to within four points of top spot in the Fall Season standings.
"You can see the quality in the team now, and the confidence in the team is absolutely brimming. That's two games in a row we've got our noses in front - the front two have been absolutely outstanding - and then we've put in a defensive masterclass after that," said Fury FC head coach Paul Dalglish.
Ottawa are in the midst of an exhausting stretch of games, recording this victory just five days after defeating Jacksonville Armada FC 2-0 on the road and only three days before they take on the Tampa Bay Rowdies who are also in action on Wednesday in Oklahoma.
"I think every single one of them deserves a great amount of credit for digging so deep to get those three points," added Dalglish. "They have earned every single one of them. There are individuals who will catch the limelight more than others, but I think every single one of them to a man gave absolutely everything and left everything on the pitch."
Haworth's goal was his second goal the past two games and fifth of the season as the Canadian strikers continues to put together a career-best season.
"It's good. We are gathering momentum here. The results are starting to go our way. Hopefully we can keep it going into the weekend," said Haworth.
Fury weathered an intense RailHawks attack in the opening moments before taking the lead themselves in the 8th minute through a cool finish from striker Carl Haworth. Ottawa's leading goal scorer received a pass from Olivera in the midfield before turning and running at Carolina's backline with pace, beating two defenders and slotting a low strike into the back of the opposition's net.
Despite the RailHawks controlling 55% of possession, Fury FC managed to register several more shots and came close to doubling their lead through chances from Haworth and newly acquired midfielder Maxim Tissot. Fury FC went into the break leading 1-0 and boasting a passing accuracy of 81.7%.
Fury continued their attacking ways in the second half and were rewarded with a second goal courtesy of a Carolina own goal.Midfielder Bryan Olivera curled in a long free kick that evaded his teammates, but skipped up off the turf, onto the arm of a Drew Beckie and into the back of his own net. Fury FC weathered the visitor's pushback and preserve Romuald Peiser's fourth clean sheet of the season bringing his career total with Fury FC to 21 - third best in NASL history.
Fury FC will close out their busy week Saturday, July 30 at 7:00 p.m. at TD Place when they take on former England International Joe Cole and former Fury FC striker Tommy Heinemann and the Tampa Bay Rowdies .
