WINNIPEG, Manitoba - The Gary SouthShore RailCats scored seven runs in the ninth inning to break open a close game and beat the Winnipeg Goldeyes 14-4 at Canwest Park Saturday night, the ‘Cats fourth win in a row against the league-leaders.

The RailCats matched their longest winning streak of the season by tagging Goldeyes starter Ace Walker (5-2) with his worst line of the year and taking advantage of some woeful Winnipeg fielding in the ninth. The ‘Cats secured their second straight series win over the Goldeyes and closed within four games of first place in the league, the closest they've been since May 29.

Walker set down nine of the first ten men he faced, but in the fourth with the Goldeyes in front 2-0, Walker hit Chris Carrara with a pitch before Eric McNamee singled. Steve Haake came up next mired in an 0-for-16 slump, but the veteran right fielder worked a full count before driving a three-run home run just over the wall in right to put the ‘Cats ahead 3-2. The homer was Haake's seventh of the year, and gave the 28-year-old 40 RBI, tops among all active Northern League players.

Josh Asanovich got the Goldeyes back even with an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth, but Brett Wallace wasted little time putting the RailCats back in front, leading off the fifth with his first home run of the season. Mike Massaro singled in another run later in the fifth and the RailCats never looked back.

Jones battled his way through 7.0 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) and nine hits while striking out five. Despite a 3.00 ERA, the win was Jones' first in his last six starts, dating all the way back to May 20. The RailCats bullpen closed out the game with scoreless innings from Kyle Heyne and Andy Shipman.

The RailCats extended their lead with an unearned run in the seventh and another tally in the eighth before breaking the game open in the ninth. The RailCats got seven runs on only four hits in the inning, drawing two walks - one with the bases loaded - and reaching base three times on errors. Winnipeg lefty Zach Baldwin started the inning before centerfielder Cory Patton was summoned to record the last two outs.

Walker allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits in seven innings, walking two and striking out three. Baldwin gave up four hits and seven runs in 1.1 innings and Patton, pitching in his fourth game, allowed his first two hits of the season.

Carrara went 1-for-3 but recorded the first two-RBI game of his RailCats career, and also scored two runs. All nine RailCats starters had at least one hit, including two each from Massaro, Jeff Beachum, Wallace and Rob Marconi. Eight of the nine RailCats starters also drove in runs as the RailCats set a season-high by scoring 14 times.

The RailCats (26-23) and Goldeyes (28-17) close out their three-game set Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. Tom Thornton (6-3, 5.11 ERA) will start for the RailCats while Bear Bay (5-1, 3.21 ERA) replies for the Goldeyes. The game will be broadcast live on 89.1 FM, The Lakeshore, and online at www.railcatsbaseball.com.
